Re: NBA Live 13 Has Been Canned

Funny that this would come up- I've been noticing a lot more users on the site, lately. Normally, the "Online Now" would be around 2500 or so, but it's been over 4000 multiple times now... This site doesn't need help from EA, haha.

Get outta here - We've offered feedback here for years. I am NOT signing up to have them ignore me again.

Some other guys can do that - I'll spend my money on games that DO listen to what we have to say, not pretend to.
Exactly. At the end of the day some people at EA treat thier interactions with the gaming community just like some politicians do with the general public. They make themselves available because they feel its a good PR thing, then when the press asks the tough questions the fold and run or sidestep the hard questions or give some canned safe response that the lawyers at EA has prepared for them. The free fall into the abyss (even if its temorary) of NBA live isnt as much Karma as it is EA's arrogance at times biting them in the rear.

But do you know what's so amazing about all of this? And yes it DOES give ammo to comments about Madden (as a franchise, not this year, its actually decent this year)... it's this - EA had to actually go out and flex their checkbook to be the best NFL game in town because they are the ONLY one. 2k Sports didnt have to raise once cent or write one single check to put the NBA Live franchise in the can. All they did was.... wait for it.... "gasp" actually made a great basketball game. When I say this, I mean great because FANS say it's great. The people who actually understand all the nuances of the NBA game, and all the little things that go along with it. These people who buy basketball games said it was great. It wasnt the actualy game company boasting about it. That's like a fat chick calling herself "thick and sexy".

I also feel that there is probably a totally different culture and vibe over at 2k vs the Live team at EA. I picture the dudes working on NBA 2k actually having fun at their job, putting their heart and soul into that game. I can picture their bosses telling them to take the night off because 2k bought them really good seats and VIP passes at a pro game to take a break but still absorb everything that is NBA basketball. I see devs and art directors there probably knowing each other's wives and kids on a first name basis. I just see in my head even with the long hours a bond between the people working on the NBA2k franchise.

In the EA building I see people that look like robots. I see bottle after bottle of 5 hour Energy and Redbull scattered across the floors of that studio. I see people working and then checking online for other jobs. Not because they want to quit (maybe they do), but moreso out of fear of getting canned for not cranking out X amount of work by then end of the day. I see people not with a name but rather employee numbers on their shirt. I see art directors and devs who sit together and dont know anything about the other person other than they are working on X peice of code or X animation. I see maybe 1 in 5 people working on the title that are actually fans of basketball or have ever been to a pro game. I see a room full of shirts and ties that know nothing about the devs or art directors or basketball arguing on what gimmick will serve up the best advertising campaign and that will be the one they force the devs to cram into the game. I see people high up the food chain who think they can solve this problem with a pen and a checkbook.

No I have not been in either studio, but I've worked in a similar environment in a little different of an industry and I have learned that you need great people AND a great culture and great LEADERS to produce a GREAT PRODUCT.

2k. Hats off to you. You knocked Goliath down by caring enough to know how to use your sling and rock rather than just buy a really expensive bazooka to get the job done.

EA, You have got Madden back on track but you need to realize that all the money you have in the world isn't going to stop you from making a crappy game.

Re: NBA Live 13 Has Been Canned

        Several things of note here.

EA does post on this forums still, just because their name isnt colored doesnt mean they dont post. In fact, there are several EA employees that have posted here in this very thread already.

NBA Live was cancelled quite some time ago, not recently. Anyone listen to the earnings call on July 31st? Did you hear any mention of NBA Live with all the other titles mentioned?

Anyone attend the stockholders meeting on July 26th? Any mention of NBA Live there either?

You think this Advisory Council is anything more than a glorified field trip?

Any idea of how exciting it is working on a title that you know before hand will not ship?

Any idea of how exciting it is coming to pretty much anywhere on the internet getting shredded for a title that you had no input on, and just did what you were told?

Any idea how easy it was to pull a group of over 60+ together, many that never worked on a basketball title before and have no interest in basketball either, together to form a cohesive unit where everyone has different ideas and how to implement them?

Any idea how cool it is to work nonstop for weeks on a feature that you know will get yanked at a moments notice?

Any idea how fun it is to work with 4 different bosses wanting to go 4 seperate directions on content / features ?

Any idea how fun it is not knowing if when you go to work the next day that you no longer have a job after relocating to the area, only to get pulled to work on a project that wont see the light of day, and knowing that it will forever be etched on your resume.

Thank you all and have a wonderful evening.

The most users I've seen at once on the Live section of OS in a while was about 150 when the first Live 13 footage dropped. After the hype and anticipation subsided and the number of users dropped back to about 15-30.

When the 2k footage dropped I was seeing 1000 to 1500 users at a time on the 2k side, even now the user count is around 800 and will only be higher in the coming days and weeks.

The 4000+ users definitely aren't coming here because the any of the negative things people may have to say about Live, if that was the case with all the negative things you can take from Live over the last 4 years the user count would be 10000+ 'round the clock.

I dont think anyone here really bashes the individuals who are the worker bee's at EA. EA's problem is the folks at the top of the food chain are business people. They run a business and that business happens to be making video games. These people could stop doing what they do and go open up a company that mass produces condoms and it would be all the same to alot of them. What I'm getting at is, to them its ALL just a business, and nothing more. But you did point out something... you said "many that have no interest in basketball whatsoever". That right there is a huge glaring problem in itself. When video games are made that do not have a real life counterpart to mirror or contrast it to, you can almost get any talented Harry, Joe, and Bob to work on the title and if the leadership is good, the game usually turns out pretty good. But when you do sports titles, there IS a real life counterpart that it will be compared to. So the big wigs at EA who failed to understand OR get talent to work on a basketball title that actaully knew, understood and had some sort of interest in basketball speaks volumes. It makes me wonder if a huge part of Madden's turn around came from them cleaning house and actually being able to get talent in that actually knew, understood and loved football.

I feel bad for the worker bees at EA, especially on the Live franchise. They are nothing more cogs in the wheel being turned by dudes that look like just about anyone youd run into on Wall Street.

Like I said, they'll be back here. Don't be suprised if they still read here. That page has been up for 3 days and only has 2 pages.Just look how many pages this topic has since since 29th til now. as a community, OS has more feedback than nlsc to offer

OS is like the litmus test for feedback

If OS community hates it, its a pretty much it won't be critically received.

If they love it, its in contention for GOTY

I'm here. New development team. Nothing will fall on deaf ears. I played ball at a high level so criticism is the least of my worries.
I personally read OS. I think their opinions are heard loud and clear. I've read almost every single post in every recent live thread good and bad.
They say they're here and that they're listening. They need to ask questions and respond on here like they do on the EA/Live forum.

Find me another major gaming forum/website that allows articles to be posted like that or millisecond clips of pierces face in a bad animation to represent the failures of the entire game and justification for the hate.

We have a winner! Best post in the thread. Folks need to remember that there are real people behind these games. The team has my respect. The suits, however, do not. You are spot on about the financial reports. Doesn't show much support. If they weren't going to release and knew it then, why wait so late to tell anyone. That's stringing fans along.

You don't think some of us know this already?

You don't think some of us have taken our own time away from our families to help mold a game that will financially benefit the developers and their families, not us?

You don't think we have offered direct feedback to developers for years to only be ignored?

You don't think we have done this circular trail of events for years only to be met with disappointment year after year?

You don't think we are STILL here wondering why it's this difficult to work with individuals that want to succeed and we want them to help shape a game that WE want to play?

We obviously have the means to open up a pathway of communication here - why can't it be this easy when I fly over 1,000 miles to actually offer help, only to be ignored later on?

This is the norm for some reason at EA. Some of us can empathize and sympathize more than you give us credit for.

I miss the guys that really listened. It's a shame Brian Ulrich left. The game was headed in a positive direction back then, albeit very slowly.
