    Realistic Shooting Percentages?

Is it possible to have anywhere near realistic shooting percentages in this game?

If I play good defense, I can typically hold the AI to 35-45% shooting, but even with all the offensive sliders turned down I regularly shoot 55-65% on All-Star and Superstar.

It seems like both teams make way too many shots when players are guarded well. Regularly I score easy buckets by simply passing into the post, backing down until the double team arrives, then kicking out to whichever player is left unguarded, hitting speedburst and running until I'm just outside the key, then pro-hopping into the key and hitting a layup through 3 defenders.

Stop abusing the pro hop. I know that it's meant to be used, but this year it is way to effective. If EA makes it less effective for Live 2005 that will be a plus along with other things that need correcting.

But like you, I too shoot a very high percentage no matter what difficulty or slider settings I have use. I rarely use the pro hop, because I prefer taking the jumper as opposed to constantly driving to the basket all the time. Try less pro hopping, and pull-up for the jumper instead. This may bring your percentage down some, but not at the NBA average.

That's a good idea. It's a shame speed burst/pro hop can't be turned off like in the NHL series.

                Re: Realistic Shooting Percentages?

                Ok, WTF.

I noticed from the slider discussion that the 'adjusted shot percentage' seems to work opposite of what you'd expect.

So I jacked that up to 100, played a game as the Sixers vs the Sonics, and shot 39.5% to the Sonics 43%.

It seemed like very few shots were going in when defenders forced an adjustment. Does this slider really work this way? If so, that seems to be a key (at least for me) for making the shot percentage more realistic. I'm pretty damn close to having played-out results that are close to the simmed results, at least for the 76ers.

One thing that's nice about having the offensive shot sliders at 0, btw, is you can still hit clean jump shots around 60% of the time if you release the ball well. Even with long range shooting at 0 I'm hitting around 1/3 of my 3 pointers.

I'll have to try that as well. I read that too but forgot about it. I hope this does lower shooting percentages for my games. Thanks for mentioning that thread, I totally forgot about reading that over the weekend.

                            Re: Realistic Shooting Percentages?

Just played another game, this time I upped the quarter length to 12 minutes. The Bullets beat my Sixers 107-97 outshooting me 50.6% to 49.3%. The shooting is a bit high because of my sloppy passing which led to a lot of transition baskets (and also kept my % kinda high since I'm typically shooting around 40% or worse in my half-court sets - yay Philly). I'm getting close to sliders that aren't necessarily realistic, but might come close to getting played games close to simmed games in dynasty mode, which is all I'm really trying to do. On the plus side, with game speed set to 40 and 12 minute quarters WASH had 85 shots to my 75, which is almost perfect (if I sim a season with the 76ers, we average 80.5 shots a game). The key to getting good shot totals seems to be keeping the steal sliders at 50 and blocking around 25 (with 25 steal/0 blocks there are barely any blocks or steals).

I'm not sure why, but as a second point, having the CPU 'adjusted shot frequency' at 100 for half a game led to the AI shooting 80%. Setting it 0 brought things down considerably.

I need to do a lot more testing, and play a couple weeks into a season, and if things seem ok with these sliders I'll post them over in the other thread. As a final note, even with long range shooting at 0, in the above game, I hit 2 of 6 from the 3-point line and the AI hit 5 of 13. I also managed, as I remember, something like 3/4 of 10 from just inside the 3 point line in open jumpers just as the shot clock was running out.

I suspect shooting % will still be a touch too high for each team, but this might be the closest we can get without editing rosters. I'll probably try the 1.04 nba-live.org roster set to see if my sliders work well with it, since the ratings for certain players seem to be more accurate. Iverson, for instance, doesn't shoot as well but is incredibly fast and agile which should, in theory, lead to a lot of drives into the paint off of passes out of double teams but a slightly lower overall FG %.
