Re: What does Live 14 need to do to compete with 2K?

My approach would be to create the most mature authentic nba simulation ever made out the box (meaning the default settings are as sim based as possible), with a secondary focus of besting Visual Concepts user v user gameplay and online experience.

That won't translate to sales immediately, but it would accomplish a few things:

    - it would restore trust & credibility to a Live brand that is lacking big time in that aspect

    - it would provide an alternative product to the default arcade nature of their competition, 2k's lack of focus in user v user gameplay and lack of focus in improving the online experience

    - This anti-mainstream approach would be attempt to steal 2k's base consumer, create a cult-like following and ground swell support. If successful, then over time slowly bring the product more towards the mainstream

It's almost as if the roles are reversed. Live should want to become the people's champ first like nfl 2k5 -v- madden or nba 2k -v- live back in the day, then sprout wings from there.

Since NBA 2K9, I've been fighting the controls to try to get my player to do what I want him to do. Instead I feel like the developers have made the game play itself based on what looks good. I'd rather some animations be nonfluent and choppy, give me some skating, whatever as long as I feel like I'm in control of my player.

2K12 and 13 both introduced this player contact problem that has ruined the experience for me. Trying to move without the ball, I just get bumped and held up by my opponent. To counter this, I have to do Mortal Kombat style controls, Left, Right + Square to free up and take a jumper. It's horrible! Unfortunately for me, the sheeple think it's great, so I'm stuck without a good b-ball game.

RESPONSIVENESS!! That's the key for EA to get me on board the Live bandwagon.
The engine Live will be using is the same as FIFA, Madden and NHL. That engine does a pretty good job of accounting for foot placement, weight and momentum. I wouldn't expect total responsiveness. E.g. If you are sprinting hard in one direction, your player won't be able to immediately be going full speed in the other direction. There will be some recovery time.

What it should eliminate is some of the more ridiculous animation problems you get in 2k. There are times when I try to intercept a pass, I have a good line in the passing lane, and the player jumps in the completely opposite direction from where the pass is going and where I am moving him, then gets stuck in a 3 second recovery animation. Hopefully, the game does a better job of accounting for body collisions as well. I hate that in 2k you can contest a running hook shot in the lane and then get beaten to the rebound because the other player ran under the backboard and there is no collision beneath the basket for some reason.
