Anyone getting better at defense? Mainly defending the paint and post. Any tips?

I'm pretty decent. I have found that pressing double team while in the post will stop a lot of the junk spinning.

If I'm not paying attention to the game, I'll get burned bad, normally on defense you can relax a bit. Not in this game though.

      Re: Defense

Calling for a double when down on the block definitely stops the spin dunks most of the time but you better be ready for the kickout to the open guy out on the perimeter.

Out in the perimeter I sag off the player especially if the are not a great shooter or having a bad game

I find that playing the off ball and manually sliding over to cover the kickout works really well. Then better be ready for the extra pass lol.

Yeah earlier i was playing as OKC against the Raptors and they kept posting DeRozan all game and i would manually double with Durant or Westbrook trying to force an outside shot but DeRozan suddenly had the post skills of Kevin McHale and lit me up for 38.

Try using off ball defenders...a lot of the time the CPU wont punish you or punish you quick enough for it..so you can use that to your advantage...

              Re: Defense

A lower risk tactic for post defense is to take a step back and not let the ball handler get into, or feel your body, it makes the spin move less effective. In addition to that, you're not just guarding the rim but the backboard as well so try to cut off the path the ball handler has to both. I usually try to keep the ball handler within the "U" shaped created by the defender body and extended arms and have some part of that "U" between the ball handler and both the basket and back board on the strong side. Also I try to push back when the ball handler tries to back me down but then take step back before he gets a chance to execute a move.

Finally, it seems successful shot challenges tend to be much later than what feels natural for me. It seems to works best to challenge while the ball is climbing to it's apex in the air, not at release from the shooters hand. Just remember most importantly if the ball handler gets into the defender's body the defender can't react as quickly as he could when in space.

                Re: Defense

I'll echo what everyone is saying about double the post. But as loadleft said taking a step back (you can actually still have your hands up to defend which is cool) works really well. It actually forces the post player into a variety of moves which is cool to see

                  Re: Defense

Another quick tip for you is to play on ball defense, don't double the post but deny the post pass! Doing so has cut the PIP I give up from 60-70/game to 30-40/game. When you see the CPU posting up and the ball handler looking to feed the post, sag off the ball handler and play his outside hand, knowing your CPU controlled post defender is playing inside of the offensive post player. Any pass is most likely going to be intercepted or deflected.

The CPU will usually try to force a few passes but then will start to reverse the ball, take long range shots, or sometimes the post player will give up his post position to come out and receive the pass. Remember you don't have to allow the CPU to feed the post and then defend. Hope this helps!

This has made the game even more fun for me because I see a lot more ball movement from the CPU. Now PIP come from cuts, the rare quick post, and my defensive mistakes, like getting beat off the dribble. Speaking of which, take note that on most drives the CPU is trying to go baseline. Overplay that side when the CPU drives from the wings, and you'll stop the CPU more times than not. Same thing when they do successfully get the ball in the post, I tap towards the baseline with each CPU bump if I'm playing it close or, I take a step back and try to stay between CPU and baseline on any moves the CPU does.

Now I get a lot more fastbreaks because of long rebounds and bad shots by the CPU. I just destroyed CPU controlled Dallas while playing as Golden State in my dynasty. I ended up giving up a high field goal percentage, partly because Calderon went nuts from 3, but the CPU couldn't score quickly and I had a ton of run outs evidenced by my +60 PIP.

Here are stats from that Dallas(CPU) GS(me) game on Alastair with 12 minutes quarters. Would love to have seen more files but really was more of a fastbreak and jump shooting contest once I shut down the post.

Is the defense improved inside? can you actually stop players from coming in constantly or blowing right by you?

                      Re: Defense

I don't know that I'd call it improve although others might. However, to stop that blow by effect the position (angle) you must guard them is, IMO, like you're trying to stop them from getting to the baseline more so than the basket. Can't really explain it but if you're having that problem play around with your position and slide more towards the baseline than exactly between ball and rim.

I was terrible at D at first

but the more I started learning when and how to use the defense slides

helped me alot. also some shots just contesting is enough - one arm/two arm

                        contest with the right stick.

I even pull the chair sometimes on D, although I really have no idea how. LOL

A lot of great tips in here guys, thanks. In particular,

                            1) thinking of the double team button as a help button, you get a Thib style aggressive Defense going.
                            2) Feathering the stick and timing LT on the drive has helped alot with perimeter D

                              I found it best to
Control the point guard or shooting guard when the CPU is in the post. Lol, I let my teammates handle it, if not the CPU seems to blow by me.
