Post Players Who Command An Automatic Double Team

One of the things I've noticed about the AI in this game is that certain players will automatically draw a double team the second they enter the paint or start dribbling from a back-to-the-basket post up animation:

Roy Hibbert
Al Jefferson
Zach Randolph
Carlos Boozer
David West
Tim Duncan

Those are just the guys I've noticed thus far.

On the flip side, there are a few defenders that the AI seems to trust to go one-on-one with just about anyone in the post. Those defenders are:

Roy Hibbert
Tyson Chandler
Joakim Noah
Nikola Peković
Serge Ibaka
Kendrick Perkins
Nick Collison
Chuck Hayes
Pau Gasol
Tim Duncan
Dwight Howard
Andrew Bogut
Dennis Rodman

I'm sure there are a lot more of these guys, as I just started looking for them on the defensive side of the ball.

These tendencies are just one of many reasons why I believe the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs are the two best teams in the game.

From what I played yesterday, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard. Good grief I could not cut off the baseline now matter how hard I tried. And when I did - they would hit me with the up and under right below the hoop.

On the other hand, I played against Tim Duncan and he played away from the baseline. He was getting me with the bank shot opposite the baseline.

I can really appreciate this game for illustrating the different tendancies of players/teams.

I havent played the Spurs yet (dont like beating my own team, lol) but most of these guys I can handle pretty well..

Blake and DeAndre Jordan give me the most trouble because of their dunk ratings...

this isn't really on topic but I played a game last night, bulls vs phoenix and I HAD to double emeka ohafor because he was going to WORK!
every single time he had a one on one matchup he scored. Against noah At that.

I have Dwight Howard in Ultimate Team, but I can't recall ever seeing him draw a double team the entire time I've used him.

The CPU just doesn't seem to respect certain post players' offensive ability, regardless of their size or strength.

Looks like Howard is rated with 95 inside shooting and 84 post offense. I'm guessing it's the "post offense" rating that determines this tendency.

As I filter the post offense ratings for the whole league, here are the guys who are 90 and above:

Tim Duncan -- 95
Kobe Bryant -- 94
Lamarcus Aldridge -- 92
Carmelo Anthony -- 92
Pau Gasol -- 92
Al Jefferson -- 92
David West -- 91
Roy Hibbert -- 91
Carlos Boozer -- 91
Zach Randolph -- 90

That contains much of the list I've made out already, just from taking mental gameplay notes.

90 has got to be the cutoff point for when the computer will bring over the auto double.

I say that because I have used all of these next guys in Ultimate Team, and they do not command a double team:

Brook Lopez -- 89
Marc Gasol -- 89
Dirk Nowitzki -- 89
Al Horford -- 89

Yeah Melo definitely gets the double. Funny thing is I notice seemed like some games it seem to come off rip then other games they don't bring it automatically but as soon as he makes one shot down there it's coming and coming hard.

So here is the problem with the double team logic in this game:

Kyle Korver has 20 points
David West has 0 points

15 points seems to be the threshold where the CPU will start to automatically double team a "hot" player every time he touches the ball.

However, even then, any player with a 90+ post offense rating will still override that first set of logic and automatically draw his usual double team the second he enters the paint or begins a backdown animation.

Here, Jonas Valanciunas was in good position to defend David West one-on-one. The backside defender even made the appropriate switch to pick up Roy Hibbert. There is no reason whatsoever for this double team to occur on West. And there is even less reason to leave a skilled three point shooter, who's already made 6 threes in this game, wide open.

Because the double team logic in this game is so limited, based only on "hot streaks" (15+ points) or post offense ratings (90+), there is no challenge to playing offense once you realize that the CPU is programmed to double down every single time in certain situations.
