is it possible to program a negative effect to "Off ball D"?

before i start, let me point out that i still beat these guys, but its not fun <_<.

online for this game is all fine and dandy till you meet a guy who decides who is going to only play half the game, by controlling the Offense but letting the CPU bail him out on D. i mean D isnt that hard to do in this game, but some of these guys act like its like pulling teeth.

the main problem with offball D, is that the CPU plays way better D than a user would, and in result you cant really punish the the user for playing lazy ball. without having to work over the CPU doing its best tony allen impression. due to the fact it seems to know what you are about to do before you do it 3/4 times.

is it possible to make it where playing offball D makes you opponent's chance of making a shot or getting by his guy way easier? cause unless im missing something here, in its current state, it just rewards the guy for being lazy

thanks in advance. just some input for either this game or live 16.

What I usually do for those type of user defenders who play off ball defense, is just control my ball handler to dribble near the user who's on an off ball match up. Once you have the ball handler as close to that user a possible. Just hand it off pretty much to who he's defending on, and it usually gives you a couple seconds to make a score.

lmfao thanks man. i used it inthe very next game i played after i made this topic. he was offballing with the PG. so to see what would happen, i put Beal @ the 1. so i went next to him and beal. and beal was smart enough to cut and get to the corner 3 spot, while the dude turned his focus to ripping me via the double team.

in the words of Mike Breen "BANG, Beal with the 3." lol . i did it 2 more times, before he started playing me like a man again.

The AI usually plays better on-ball and off-ball D that most users, but thats not the case with every team/player. You can make them work hard off the ball too by doing things like calling plays for, or calling the screen/pick with the guy he is guarding..., all kinds of holes open up, and thats exactly what the AI does when you play off-ball on the superstar setting at times. It could be that the guys the opponent is using is a known black hole on defense, and your personal "touch" is needed to fill the hole, but whatever the reason its a valid defense by a coach with an obvious limitation or specific strategy.

I don't like to get into the on-ball/off-ball D conversations because IMO, its a video game and both are valid play styles to be overcome within the rules. To eliminate the argument for myself (used to be a big personal gripe), I switched to playing the game with my player icons off, no shot feedback, no fatigue/shot rings, I just play like it looks on TV, clean, and I can't complain about what I can't see, namely, my opponents icons not guarding me. Playing defense that way took me awhile to get down, but the game flows much better for me now that I don't worry about the visual feedbacks, and also provides an advanced challenge.

Also noticed that people observing the CPU driving to the hoop a lot, I think its because the AI sees the player as the path of least resistance, just like we do. that doesn't mean we can dictate how other play the game. Its stupid IMO to try to keep trying to guard Westbrook, Walker, or Wall off the dribble and keep getting beat on drives to the hoop.

Some off-ball play in the right situations (why would you allow anyone to constantly cross you up, throw into the same post position over and over or score with the same pick and roll without adjustment?) will force the CPU to pull up mid range or pass, which I see all the time now that I mix the styles using my 76ers, and with varied results(win some lose some).

But for those who hate off-ball D, and like broadcast camera ( I don't play from the other cameras, so I really can't suggest those), turn off the feedback icons in the settings if your skill level can manage it, problem solved, just play. You can't hate what you can't see.
