Re: Question to Lynnsanity (Player Lock)

    Thanks again, Lynsanity!

I know if I have a question about Player Lock, you are the person to ask. And I remember last year you got frustrated with Live 04 but I didn't listen. I still went to eBay and bought a PS2 and Live 04 and thought that I could perhaps work it out on my own. When I got those two, 30 minutes later I was back on eBay trying to sell my newly-bought PS2 and copy of Live 04!

But you seem to be enjoying this year's version of Live so I'm going to give it a try again. Please PLEASE keep me posted about everything you could find out about Player Lock mode - all the negatives... positives... what your technique is... anything! I know some other guys are playing Live using Player Lock ONLY so this thread is also for them!

    Good times...

Re: Question to Lynnsanity (Player Lock)

Player lock is hidden in the pause menu this year.

        * Before tipoff, press pause to go into the pause menu.
        * Click CONFIGURE CONTROLLER.
        * In the center of the CC menu you will see "No Player Lock"
        * Toggle this to the position of your choice, and voila, Player Locking

You are welcome, but de nada. I am just glad there are other ppl that are interested in this mode of playing. Currently, I am playing the Rockets vs. Heat. I am going to try to figure out what works and what doesn't. Will play a couple different positions, and hopefully find out when the cpu does, and doesn't take it's own shots.

Re: Question to Lynnsanity (Player Lock)

1st Play: I am Yao Ming. I don't touch the ball, as the cpu is working it around for an open shot. The ball goes to Jim Jackson. Pump fake, drive, pull up jumper. Missed.

3rd Play: Pumpfake, Jackson with the Dish to Lue. Drive, mid range shot for two.

4th: Tmac takes it up the court. Shake N Bake. Mid Range, Foul.

They are playing the game without me right now

5th: Bring the ball up the court with Ming, pass to Howard in the post. Back in, can't get a shot, turn, spin, fadeaway near the basket. Score.

                6th: Repeat, but a foul.

                Moved to Tmac...

1st: Bring ball up the court, passed to Lue in the post, he throws it back. Deflection to the back court. I retrieve it, take it up the court, and pass it back to Lue. He puts it up for the layup.

Changing Plays: 3 point, Motion, Box, Flex

Motion: Botched play. Yao with the offensive foul. Next possession, I get a steal pass to Lue. Lue, on the break.... HE FINISHES... OMG... I dunno what is going on.

So far, so good. The computer is very dumb, but will take it's own shots, but only semi-decent ones. That explains the shot clock expiring some what, but the game is young. Let's continue.

Block by Tmac. Yao and Tmac on the break. Selfish monkey man Ming takes it to the hole. I was running with him, afraid he was going to run out of bounds.

Hmmm. This is a problem. I have yet to isolate when they will run out of bounds. My theory is that lower primacy rated players may not take the shot, and will run out of bounds. I'll keep observing.

So far I have not taken a shot, and we are up 17-10.

Turnover, Jackson all the way. FOULED.

Hit one, missed rebounded, finger roll.

I'm typing right now, and we have gone on a 5-0 run. I am just standing in one position.

FLAW: Shot clock running down. Pass into Yao in the Post. He turns, he pump fakes, he looks toward Tmac as the clock runs out. Hmmmm.

FLEX: Pass to Lue, works it, passes to Howard. Shot clock winding down. He shoots. FOUL.

3 POINT: Pass to Lue on the wing. He passes to Howard. Clock winding down, he posts up, and takes a contested jumper in the paint.

I continue to call for the 3, and Yao Ming continues to look for his own shot. GRRRRR... This is starting to look like me playing at the YMCA. They won't even give me the ball. 26-14, and I have yet to take a shot.

Motion again. They are playing decent ball. Actually thinking about taking the shot. Not passing to me. Maybe I am breaking the play. They pass the ball around. Time running out. 4-3-2 Wait, they passed it to me. I take the shot. FOUL...

                Hit both. 30-14... I have 2 points...

Box... Work the ball around, no shots taken. Time running out. They give it to me.

I am noticing a trend here. I will go to Lue, and see if McGrady takes the buzzer beaters.

                NOPE!!!

THEY WILL NOT SHOOT BUZZER SHOTS.

If you hear the clock, and they can't get out of the break down/back down animation, they will stop cold and look lost. FORCE THE SHOT!!!

                Howard is at the line.

THE CPU will NOT take the 3. You have to force it, Well so far. I think I will quit and play with the Sonics. Maybe Jesus Shuttlesworth will shoot the trey.

                SONICS

Oh my, Rashard Lewis actually drove to the hole. Well, not that big of a thing, as I had Kobe do it before, but interesting, as he didnt go for the mid range.

I call 3 pointer again, and again Rashard Drives to the hole. Great for Player Lock, but bad for coaching. I am almost ready to bench his butt.

Stupid, idiotic, Ray Allen. I call 3 point again. He looks around, see's the lane open and drives. What is this? What if I need a 3? Grrrrr... Do it once more, Mr. Allen. I have 3 nails for ya.

Uh oh. Antonio Daniels looked like he may take a 3. I got set into half court, then change the play to 3. STOLEN...

                Nevermind... Drive and Mid range...

Conclusion: The computer will shoot. It has flaws, and can be really stupid, but it will take a shot or two, just not beyond 3 point range, or when the clock is running down. Long story short: Score this one for the GOOD GUYS!!!

                            W-O-W ! ! ! ! !

I was reading your post and I felt like +++ I +++ was playing a game of NBA Live! Thanks for all the details! This is the type of post I was looking for - play-by-play description and your thoughts! I had fun reading it!

Let me dissect your post a bit...

Wow! Couldn't get any better than that! The CPU not only moves the ball BUT does something with it, too! Years ago when I was still playing Live, I play the same way. I will not ask for the ball unless the clock is running out and I don't think the CPU going to shoot the ball and/or if I'm "feeling" it.

3rd Play: Pumpfake, Jackson with the Dish to Lue. Drive, mid range shot for two.
Good! The CPU's still moving the ball around! Couldn't ask for more!

4th: Tmac takes it up the court. Shake N Bake. Mid Range, Foul.

They are playing the game without me right now
Wouldn't complain... unless it's like the middle of the first quarter and I *still* haven't touched the ball! But so far, I like how the CPU teammates act. I'm definitely getting this game now!

5th: Bring the ball up the court with Ming, pass to Howard in the post. Back in, can't get a shot, turn, spin, fadeaway near the basket. Score.
                            Perfect!

Based from everything you've said so far, it actually looks *perfect* to me! Why did you say the "computer is very dumb?" Because they don't pass the ball that often to you? Btw, do you get blocked a lot (including your CPU teammates)?

Block by Tmac. Yao and Tmac on the break. Selfish monkey man Ming takes it to the hole. I was running with him, afraid he was going to run out of bounds.
                            Haha! That's what I would've done, too!

Hmmm. This is a problem. I have yet to isolate when they will run out of bounds. My theory is that lower primacy rated players may not take the shot, and will run out of bounds. I'll keep observing.
Suppose you force the CPU to take its own shot and there's a defender trailing him. Does his shot usually gets blocked or what? What usually happens. Also, can you change his shot midway through his shot? Like hit the lay-up button twice or something like that?

Turnover, Jackson all the way. FOULED.
This was a fastbreak, right? The CPU took the shot on its own? Cool!

I'm typing right now, and we have gone on a 5-0 run. I am just standing in one position.
Wow... dude... how many fingers do you have? ;p

I continue to call for the 3, and Yao Ming continues to look for his own shot. GRRRRR... This is starting to look like me playing at the YMCA. They won't even give me the ball. 26-14, and I have yet to take a shot.
Now this is unrealistic here. Are you breaking the play or something? Or are you just standing in one spot?

THEY WILL NOT SHOOT BUZZER SHOTS.
                            Never?

Conclusion: The computer will shoot. It has flaws, and can be really stupid, but it will take a shot or two, just not beyond 3 point range, or when the clock is running down. Long story short: Score this one for the GOOD GUYS!!!
Have you ever played a game where the CPU took a 3 point shot where you did not force it?

Overall, I think I'm gonna like this game. I think I'm gonna have to play at least three games with my created player just to have some feel of how everything works. I mean, last time I played Live was back in 1999 (I was still hooked on Live 98's Player Lock mode) so it's going to take a LOT of getting to used to. I tried that last year but as I've said over and over again, last year's Player Lock was completely useless.

One idea - instead of using Player Lock mode, why don't you try to use the off-ball thing (if they still have it) just to see if anything would be different. I'm guessing no but, hey, I could be wrong.

Again, thanks for posting such a long-a** and detailed post. I really enjoyed reading it. It was like a transcript of a play-by-play! If you have any other thoughts or whatever about Player Lock, please post it here again.

                              W-O-W ! ! ! !

Re: Question to Lynnsanity (Player Lock)

Out of the box the computer will block more shots than not. I am using a modified version of Pared's sliders. As far as them playing without passing me the ball, that was probably the fist 5 minutes of a nine minute quarter. I was not actually in the play, as I was observing the player movement.

When I was Yao, I was in the post, and they did give me the ball, or at the least, they would give it to Howard.

The only buzzer beaters they take are at the end of a break down/post up animation. If the animation starts with only a couple seconds left, they do nothing, and you have to force the shot. This leads to a shot, a foul, or a block.

I had to set blocks to zero. Even then, there are a multitude of blocks when the computer takes jumpers. The computer does not always know when to look for it's offense, then again, human beings take bad shots.

Most of the forced layups with a trailer end up as hits or misses. Some are blocked, it just depends on the position of the defender.

3 Point Play... The computer will line the outside with players, but the players never go for the 3, as the lane is now open. The 3 point play is being used as an isolation.

Never had a teammate shoot a 3. Like I said, the computer has a few quirks, and is sometimes a bit silly with it's shot selection.
