What is the key to improving players?

Whenever I do the training sessions, I either gain some in one category and lose some in another, or else if I balance it out, nothing happens.

You can't actually lose stats in this game.

You have to spend at least 40 or 50 to see improvement in any areas. So, as you can't lose stats, just put 40-50 in the ones you want to improve. You can leave the others at 0 and the ratings won't change.
