Why are people still hype about 2k basketball?

I am not trying to start a flame war... and hopefully this doesn't get immediately closed, but I want to know: Why do you guys still like 2k when it's obviously not getting any better?

I wouldn't call myself an EA fan, but I admit that the only time I went PURELY to 2k was when Live came out with the worst game ever (07.) I needed my fix and went to 2k7. 2k7 was a great game, but it had huge problems online. Same with 2k8...

They, in my opinion, have still not fixed the offense/defense balance issue... and the game still looks the same. Let me rephrase, it doesn't LOOK the same, but it looks like it PLAYS the same.

Like all they've been doing is polishing the graphics. The online play is, I bet anything, still laggy. Why do people keep saying, "I know 2k10 will be the best sim basketball game ever... even though the trailers are weak and they haven't released any gameplay footage."

Say I'm hating if you want, but this is an honest question... what does 2k give you that is so special that makes you ignore the fact that they are messing up their marketing/game more every year?

First of all, about marketing - people want to see gameplay videos badly, but look at EA: They've been marketing their game perfectly for years and it's been...excuse for the language....crappy! Marketing got nothing to do with the quality of the game. If people are measuring a game's quality by marketing...well, it says something about these people...
NBA 2K may have not made a HUGE leap every year, but 2K's trying to fix some things every year and listen to the people asking for this and that.

You must be refering to the PS2 version, I can't explain it in other way...

People are excited because they beleive 2K is listening to them and put all their efforts to put a great game. That's probably the reason why people are excited about Live this year: EA, for the first time ever, listened to people and made a better game (though the animations are still choppy - 2001 style, in my opinion).

The title for this thread should have been: Why are people still hyped about EA basketball? This title is much more logical. And the answer to this questions is MARKETING. Not quality, for sure.

I honestly do not know which game you have been playing because 2K is and has been for quite a while the only basketball game out there. In all honesty I used to be in love with NBA Live from 2000 until 2004, after that I saw a gameplay video of NBA 2K5 and off there I went to this day.

It's nothing personal against NBA Live but they simply have not been able to publish a quality basketball game in quite some time yet and when you refer to 2K only improving in graphics are you really trying to be sarcastic there? because the only thing NBA Live has over 2K is graphics and not by much.

What is even more interesting is that when I played NBA Live 09 to give Live a chance again they still had layup and dunk animations from NBA Live 06 and Marv was still saying things he would say in NBA Live 05, 06.

So to put it all in perspective I really don't know which basketball game you have been playing but if you own a Playstation 3 or a XBOX 360 for the past three to four years if you were a true basketball fan you had no other choice but to go for the best game, and it always happened to be the NBA 2K series.

PS. In 2010 it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top, but if NBA 2K10 will be a more polished version of NBA 2K9 with the new My Player mode, great association and online play, then why am I going to pay an extra $60.00 to buy Live, 2K has all Live has to offer and some more...

Totally agree with you VC. Live has not been as good as 2k in some time. People are all hyped up because Live has made some improvements and have put out a ton of info and vids. I am not saying that Live isnt going to be good, I just think that 2k will be better. Live has made some jumps, but they are giving us stuff that was already in 2k.

In my opinion 2K basketball is the best sports series we've ever seen especially when counting both pro and college games. They have never let us down (with the exception of 2K9 to some, I happen to be included in that group) and they always improve the game, listen to us fans and try their hardest to put out a good product. It's loyalty, familiarity and a damn good game that keep people excited. I was talking to one of my boys who loves 2K and I mentioned to him that I'm probably only getting Live this year and that I'd gotten sick of 2K basketball for the most part. He just chuckled, called me crazy and said there is no way he'd ever get sick of 2K basketball.

That being said, there are always transitions, everything evolves and right now it looks like Live has a step up in that area with DNA. The animations look improved but aren't better than 2K's and the graphics are simply personal opinion on what you like more. It may still be even or 2K might be slightly better this year but I think by the 2011 versions Live will be significantly better than 2K. That doesn't mean that 2K won't be very good or even great and still have its loyalists, it'll be a good thing if we have two good-to-great NBA games. Now we just need to get College Hoops back, which IMO CH 2K8 remains the best basketball game ever made.

Cheers to 2K though, in the Dreamcast/Xbox/Xbox360 eras they ruled the basketball world and kept us basketball heads happy for a decade and I'm sure they will find an answer to Live's improvements and keep going strong.

Played the ever living hell out of College Hoops 2K4 in legacy mode and loved it, it was a huge improvement over CH2K3. Didn't play more than exhibitions in NBA 2K4 but enjoyed it.

What's idiotic is that 2K is adding new modes, so it obviously is getting better, or at least deeper. A lot of other stuff is refined, and quite frankly, 2K listens to its customers and that's why they have customer loyalty. They know what people want added, and they deliver.

Besides, from what I've seen from the "other game," I'd rather play NBA 2K8 (great game) or 2K9 for another few years than an updated Live.
