I presume as a volleyball player you'd know better than me, but I just wanted to second the thought on sand jumping. It works wonders, as well as continuously trying to dunk.

I'm 5'10.5 and I can grab the rim and I haven't played organized competitive basketball since 8th grade. I don't do any weight lifting and I haven't even heard of plyometrics. I guess just jump a lot and keep trying. Good luck.

i'm 6'1" and can dunk. not a great athlete but I work hard.

        1. try to dunk every time you go to the gym
        2. do maximum effort jumps (verticals) and try to touch a point on a basketball goal. example two hand touch on the rim.
        3. squats, deadlifts, hang clean/snatch/jerk
        4. stretch

And why will you need to be able to dunk? To show off before pregame and practice? I would be more concerned about whether you can shoot, dribble and pass.
This. Dunking will not get you any pt on my team.....

as far as dunking i'd highly recommend the vertical jump bible. It explains pretty much all you will need to know about jumping.

I don't know why he'd need to be able to dunk but I can understand why he's want to dunk. It's true, dunking doesn't make me spectacular but it is a heck of a lot of fun. There's no getting around that.

well if you can dunk then you are playing the game above the rim. a valuable skill on both offense and defense. If dunking is his motivation to improve his jumping ability then so be it. I say go for it.
