What do you like/hate about the big 3 Live/2k/ID

[b]This is just to post about the upcoming big 3, and how they have evolved with praise and criticisms over the years.

Since it has been here the longest, I'll start with EA Sports NBA Live series.

Live has been with us from early days, giving us great games like Lakers vs. Celtics, Bulls vs. Blazers. Eventually making it to the game we now call NBA Live. Now whether EA haters want to admit it or not, Live has some of the best animations of any basketball game, and rightfully so. Along with a host of great perks, and some of the best advertising such as the Dr. J. freethrow line dunk commercial, which catches the eyes of many consumers, and makes it's sales sky high, EA has remained a huge force in the basketball world.

With that, EA does, and should also take the harshest criticism for producing games like Live 2002 which was absolutely horrible, and making Live 2003 a dunkfest, and super high scoring race in which you can score 30 40 50 points with EA's much hyped, and self claimed innovative feature (ID had this type of control as well, and 2k3, had its own style) freestyle control in which you were promised to be able to have total control of the players, but you could rack up the points with crossovers, and with minimal defense, except making guys like John Stockton block Shaq's power dunks.

EA until now has been lazy, and complacent doing things like having one lone stadium for every team, with a different floor, and graphics that should warrant the programmers a whipping. Take a look at Live 2004, and you now see every single player with hazel brown eyes, and puppet type midget bodies. Take a look at Steve Francis for instance, he looks just like a short Hakeem Olajuwon. Again take a look at Ben Wallace, who now looks exactly like a grown Buckwheat. EA has had too much time to fix these type of things, and should in no way without excuse look as horrible as it does now. While not the worse, the gameplay of the Live series has faded into the arcade market, with flaws that made you last year have to edit the entire game to make it decent. This is a programmers job, not the one who pays 50 bucks.

All in all Live now has more competition threatening to knock it off of its horse, and has to come correct this year, with promises to add its new 10 man mo cap, and a host of other features including a refined freestyle, and better D, we'll see if EA will once again start to bring us a great game, or disappoint the masses as they have the past few years.

    Sega/VC

Sega, Sega, Sega, why did you drop the ball? Before you guys slam this statement, keep reading. Sega released it’s basketball game in the form of NBA2k, and captured the heart of many. Not only were the graphics fresh, new, and nice looking, but it started out from the jump as a great series, and over achieving version, and still is. VC has lived up to it’s name in the 2k series managing to produce the best graphics ever in a basketball game, along with arguably the best post up game in earlier versions, and a nice amount of it’s own animations, MJ type fade-a-way shot, scoop shot lay-up, swatting blocks, etc… Sega has worked hard to put themselves in the race for the title as the best. Although the EA lovers that hate Sega won’t admit it, it is the game with the most potential, and could be the game people we’ve all been waiting for, and it is Lives biggest next door nightmare.

Now comes the part where we get frustrated. Sega has been terrific up until the dreamcast 2k2 version. If you replay it, you’ll see it all, graphics, animations, tough AI, you name it, but once it was switched over to the new gen consoles, that’s where it began to fall short.
The 2k2 version for the PS2 Xbox was a rushed game that had many people upset with the too high shooting percentages from the AI, and easily noticeable lack of real polish due to it being rushed which ruined the experience for a great deal of Sega fans.

Now VC stepping out of the box, was willing to listen to it’s consumers so they decided to take suggestions, but dropped further IMO due to addition and subtraction. The 2k3 series made on a new engine while not too bad, was plagued by innumerable annoying, replay value reduced bugs. You could throw a pass and the ball would fly to the rafters as if it suddenly grew wings. The passing system was horrible, by throwing a hard pass to a player no matter who he is, he would bobble the ball uncontrollably, sometimes out of bounds, or sometimes right through the last second of a close last shot type game. Then you have the worse animations ever by a player (J-Rich) who should never, ever, ever do another mo-cap session in his life. Sega successfully took out the animations that made the game great, and replaced them with J-Rich animations (Sega, please don’t mo cap anymore GS Warrior players) which was a huge disappointment, and sometimes quite ugly scenario. The post up game was absolutely voided, while the one it had was great, it was changed, and you couldn’t back down Earl Boykins with Shaq. How was this allowed to be kept in the game? Even with the addition of sliders, the continual depletion of the create a player, dunks that only took a 2 inch leap to make, while the newly annoying crossover was implemented, along with slow dragged out gameplay, and stiff AI with no off the ball movement of its own, this all helped in ruining the gamers experience in Sega’s operation drop the ball.

This year promises to add better and new features, even more crisp graphics as always, a new year under the belt with the new engine, promises of a better offensive, and defensive system, and still a mystery as to how the gameplay, and AI will be, we all have to wait to see if Sega has delivered what we asked of them in the least, and with only a few screenshots, a couple of short short video clips, and no real advertising as always (Sega fire the marketing dept. you have or hire one for Goodness sake!!!!!!!!!!!) we anticipate if the game will live up to the potential we know it has, or if the decline spiral continues.

Lastly we have Microsoft and ID

While ID is the most underrated of the 3 it boast the best single player gameplay of the 3. Play against Indiana, and you’ll see Reggie Miller run through double screens to the three point line to drain a jimmy just as you saw him doing on NBC (nbc the good ole days). Play NJ and they will run you up and down the court all game long. Play the Lakers and the triangle offense is in full effect. Play the Magic, and T-mac will light you up. Same with Philly, AI will take you continually to test your heart, and SA will show you an unstoppable Duncan. This games gameplay has many good perks also, with it’s fluid motion, and sim like qualities, it has gained the attention of many gamers who played seasons in disbelief of the lifelike AI qualities.

As does the other games, ID has some annoying flaws like hardly any fouls, and freethrows, and it should be criticized for continuing to bring in the funkiest graphics for a game that is xbox exclusive, with the type of power the xbox has. The gameplay is good, but the graphics make you want to puke at times. Not only that, but someof the animations are the most unrealistic of them all. The one handed tomahawk, and the fact that every single player in the game has the perfect fundamental formed jimmy of Ray Allen, even guys like Shaq, and Mutombo shoots with perfect form just like Allen. This shouldn’t be so.

With the second edition done, and the third one coming, the graphics are improving, although it’s no excuse for the horrid type graphics engine which gets a pass from the most loyal ID lover because of the gameplay (but should be criticized as I stated before, because you can only get so realistic with gameplay only), and a presentation that the programmers must’ve lied to Bill Gates about to get the game out of the door, we are all looking to see this one improve on a solid foundation and succeed .

All of the big 3 have things the others don’t which is great for us because we have a variety in bball games, and they will all strive to outdo eachother which in turn gives us all better options. While some argue over games that haven’t been released yet, I plan to buy all of them to enjoy, until next year, there is still more to come.

Re: What do you like/hate about the big 3 Live/2k/ID

The thing I hate about all of them is that they aren't here yet!

    But anyways...

    ESPN Basketball
The 2k series has been great, although 2k3 seemed to disappoint many.... Fantastic gameplay, imporved A.I, and a revamped franchise will make this game the "King of Basketball Games."
What I don't like about this upcomming game, based on information; screenshots, previews, etc.... Is that the computer A.I. has not been fixed... I may be wrong.... but it seems that whenever the offense drives to the hole, nobody helps out... Also, I'm not sure if this has been assured, but in past IGN previews, they say VC will take the arcadey approach.... BUT since IGN sucks anyways, and OS is soooo much better... they're most likely wrong... But if I wanted an arcadey basketball game, I would just pick up NBA Street... Those are my only grudges...
What I do like about ESPN Basketball are their great graphics... They are AMAZING! Though, I better see a completly revamped Franchise mode... and also a revamped commentator thingy...

    NBA Live
EA... Where shall we start? I am a 2k fan.... but I was a complete NBA Live nut! Lets see...
What I like about this up comming game is the new modes and scenes based on the interview with IGN.... The new animations are pretty cool aswell....
What I SEVERLY dislike are the graphics... I need great graphics to play a great game... which I think EA will produce... If only they fix their graphics... The players look too short IMO....

    NBA Inside Drive
I have a PS2, so I know nothing, nor do I care for this game unless they put on the PS2....

    That is all! Good day!

Jacksonville Jaguars - Seattle Seahawks - Seattle Mariners - Jacksonville Sharks - Oklahoma City Thunder - Florida Gators
