Re: Im STILL a bit worried about Inside Drive this year...

I guess this is a good discussion. It probablly boils down to what is actually most important to each individual player. I used to be such a 'stickler' for stats....if stats werent extremely authentic down to a T, it would ruin my experience. Now recently over the years, I have sort of took a turn to actual gameplay fun. There's that certain rewarding feel that sucks you into a Nintendo style console game. Its that exaggerated flow and rythme that sucks you in to its control and reminds you that playing a video game should be first and formost...FUN.

I guess thats I look for first now when playing a sports game....even above down to the detail stat replication. I think sport game companies spend too much time trying to replicate every detail of the sport, management, politically correct gear and facial expressions, that they sometimes leave little time left over to actually observe how their game feels and flows in the players controller hand.

There was this one stupid little mini game in Mario Party 4 or so that had Mario and his gang of characters doing basketball free throws into a group of basketball hoops hung from the wall and I couldnt begin to tell you how satisfying this felt and played. It was such a fun experience timing your jump and watching the player release the basketball at the apex and the graphics were cartoony YET very detailed with lots of realistic ball physics off the rim and net snapping action that just made this simple little mini game a delightful treat!....imagine what this sort of amazing design and attention to detail could be done with a full scale basketball game??

Lisa I agree 100% with what your saying!....i think I can almost pinpoint what your saying and what seems to be wrong with ID. Based on the recent videos of ID 4 on the iGN website ( and also from last year's gameplay ) ID has some mix of really smooth fluid layup and drive to the hoop animations BUT it also has some of the worst ball handling animations as well to offset it. Players kinda of zig zag when changing directions with no fluidity in their transitions and the spin move, crossovers and switch to backing dowm are all done very jerky or unrealistically. It gives areas of the game a very unpolished feel to it.

Basketball probably more then any other sport should have a fluid, graceful flow to its movement...especially when moving and ball controlling and ID just doesnt translate this feeling well in these areas....Players have a certain stiffness or limited range of motion in ID which hurts the feel of the game to a certain degree. i also agree with the lack of struggle or contact with players especially under the basket or inside. There's no feeling of bumping and grinding and fighting for positioning. Also, the jerky way the players cut and drive in the half court with their limited range of motion and zig zaggy movements, makes covering players a bit difficult at times and also ruins the gracefulness of the sport. Players will occassionally feel like they are mounted on 'sun dials' at times

Re: Im STILL a bit worried about Inside Drive this year...

There are two distinct problem areas with Inside Drive.

                  1) The animations: Without question NBA Live & ESPN have more animations than ID. A LOT more. More animations tend to add more realism.

Unfortunately, in ESPN's case I tend to think the increased number of animations take away from the level of "control" I want to have. IMHO

                  2) Presentation: As much as I love the announcing crew, High Voltage needs to REALLY work on the atmosphere/presentation included in the game. Heck, use the hard disk. Include real half time routines with EACH NBA dance team. Have half time highlights of other games. Add more life to the crowds (they've done this with 2004). Really have a huge pre-game show with specatcular player introductions for each team.

If both areas are addressed and they keep the same tight gameplay that's currently there we'll see ID getting it's deserved props.

Until then, it'll be up to us die hard fans to explain to people why NBA Inside Drive is the best playing series out there.
