It's official ID2004 is the best basketball game this year bar none and has converted a 2Ker over completely. Last year I like ID but still liked NBA2K3 more. But, this year ID2004 destroys it. I'm a hardcore bball fan and I see the game different than casual fans. I've played like 21 games so far and love it although there are some flaws. Today I popped in ESPN NBA2K4 just to play a quick exhibition and couldn't take watching my teammates stand around or watch the computer come down court and take shots with 20 secs left on the shot clock. Every team in ESPN run ISO and nothing else really. When I saw the AI Iso for Austion Croshere that did it for me and ESPN will probably go back which is sad. ID plays so realistic and every game is different from the last. The computer will take advantage of defensive matchups, exploit zones, and what really seals it for me is when you see the AI try to force you to drive with your off hand. You won't see Shaq taking a fadeaway or Kerry Kittles posting up and if you do you can change individual player sliders and make sure it never happens again. Your teammates will run off of screens to get free or set screen and picks for you. You can actually run the give-n-go or get your big men in the game in the post. Dallas takes advantage of there good three-point shooters and the lakers will run the triangle to perfection.
A few things bug me like steals and blocks. It's too hard to block jumpshots or any shots for that matter. And the AI grabs too many steals. One more thing I noticed that I hope can be fixed is if you drive to the hoop and do a layup the center or power forward don't contest the shot. Another small gripe is that after a defensive rebound when there is a chance for a fast break the PG will stand still behind the pack calling for the ball too much instead of running so you can lead the fast break. It's too easy to spin around your defender and drive to the hoop even on All-Star but took the dribbling down and it helps. Also the graphics still annoy the hell out of me and if messing with the gameplay for me. Because when I think I'm passing to Kidd for an open jumper sometimes I really pass to Kmart and I end up taking long range shots with him because they look so damn similiar. I have either you icon passing a bit more or look for noticeable equipment like Kidd's knee pad. Hopefully I'll get use to it because it comes back to hunt me a lot. Those are really my biggest complaints so far and I'm loving this game even though I feel bad leaving ESPN behind after all this years but I'm having way too much fun with ID. I can't wait to join some really good online leagues and find some good competition...
