I'm an absolute statistical freak and if a BBALL sim doesn't produce realistic stats, I just can't play it (well I can, but I don't enjoy it). Not only does ID produce fairly realistic stats, it just "feels right" to play. The flow feels nice, I like the animations of the players (contrary to popular opinion), especially the jumpshots (although the release is a little slow) and the lay-ups.
Sega 2K3 was the game I mainly played last year, before being tempted by a local sale to buy ID2003. After playing ID2003, I tested out ESPN2K4 and it just felt awful to play, the shooting animations where awful and the off-ball movement was as non-existant as Sega2K3.
What I love in ID2K4 is the ability to pass around the perimeter, and wait for a player to get open through a variety of picks. I love splitting open defences with constant passing and ball movement, and either getting the open drive or jumpshots from players running around picks off the ball. Fantastic.
This game utilises fast breaks and they can be very useful, especially when using a small lineup (i'm the GSW, and have Van Exel, Richardson and Claxton on the majority of the time), but there is still nothing more rewarding than sinking and open jumper after constant movement and passing.
I love this game!
