First off a very big THANK YOU!@#$ To the guys on this board and the guys at OS for the reviews and chatter on the boards about ID 2004. I would have overlooked it again this year if there wasn't such a strong love for this game. I'm happy that all the posts got into my thoughts amd made me get this game.
I've loved BBall games since the Sega Genesis days... Loved Coach K College and the Live Series. I'd try any of the games that came out on the market, NBA Action, IN the Zone, ESPN (old license), all the way to the current games.
I've been frustrated with the current games the past couple years. I wish that there were some games that you could have a legit debate over like you can with Madden and ESPN NFL. Live was decent and ESPN was to a degree... and the ESPN college games were alright. I actually liked College Hoops this year alot until I finally picked up and played Inside Drive 2004. I had tried ID back when it first came out and loved it, but then for some reason got drawn away by the 2k series.. I still don't know why.
Minus the graphics, I don't see why any true Basketball fan would pass on this game after playing it for a few games. It takes more than one game to see all the great aspects of what this game engine does right (and very little it does wrong). My only complaints on Defense are steals... I personally think that the ESPN games have grabbing steals in open lanes and what not down great and I hope that ID gets that too.
For anyone that's not bought this game and would be curious to why an ESPNer/LIVEite personally has decided too make this my game this year?
It's the gameplay obviously!@#$ You can pass it around until you find an open man... guys are constantly trying to cut and get open... double teams are done well (even without a 10 man mo-cap session.) Teams play like they do... play the lakers the go to shack and kobe unless you can shut one of them down... then it's Payton time! The ability to make players play how you want with the edit features is great - no other sports game comes close to individual player sliders... speaking of sliders, it's nice to have a game where sliders DO make a difference and work.
They've got the gameplay, now if MS and HV can overhaul the graphics and make'em prettier or better than the competition (probably not anytime soon), there is no reason that this game should not be the best selling BBall game on the XBox. In a way it sucks that PS2 only owners can't get a taste of what ID can do.
