How do you play defense?
I am wondering if it is possible to play defense in this game, especially online? It looks near impossible to stop the fastbreak cause as soon as you score, there is an open player under your basket waiting for a long throw. Any help would be much appreciatedTags: None -
Re: How do you play defense?
Rules, it is very possible to play defense in this game. I'd like to start by saying that most fast--breaks are a result of poor shot selection. when you take bad shots and your guys are scrapping for offensive boards, theres a very good chance you'll get beat on the break. Believe me I've been where you are, and I know what your talking about. To kill the fast-break point, you must take better, and smarter shots; it also doesn't hurt to take control of one of your guys down low and going for the board manually. This has worked for me, and should also work for you. Before I go on to D., another great way to stop the FB is to take control of the man furthest back (usually your PG), and stop the play using the left trigger - the latter takes some skill and anticipation as its very easy for the offensive man to slip you.
I've stuggled hard with this game defensively. I was nearly at the point of selling it because I didn't feel like the effort I was putting into defense was being rewarded properly. Well, I'm here to say that I'm glad I didn't sell the game, because one day while playing, I stumbled upon something that has bee giving me great results defensively lately.
This is what I discovered: the first man you should control on defense is you point-guard. With him selected, immediatly press "Y" to access the icon control feature. If the opposing guard attempts to drive, press him as hard as you can, he'll still advance, but this is where the icon selecting comes into play. Your timing will have to vary as different players have diff. speed, but you'll need to bring help to your guard, or whomever is assigned to the offensive player, immediately. never forget to use the left trigger, especially near the basket. I say this because when you jump out of the defensive crouch, you jump straight up instead of the swattblocking, which results in fouls very often. You should repeat this process over and over, pulling off the initial defensiveman to cover whatever player is open until you get the turn-over, or, what I see alot, is the short pull up which is really a failed drive to the basket for the the dunk of layup. The reason the drive failed due to help that cuts of the driving lane. Another sweet aspect of this strategy is that the altered shot should be contested by the man that came over to help, which will result in a brick much of the time.
This strategy works for the 3 point-crazy people as well, you just have to be a little quicker.
Trust me, I play with the knicks, who's defensive rating is 68, and I cause havoc for people who use and of the higher rated teams.
To end this I'd like to say that you can not leave much up to the computer, especially defense. You have to be quick in getting back and taking control of your guys, especially the big guys since they cauuse the most problems. And just like in real life, YOU MUST CONTEST EVERY SINGLE SHOT! this will not prevent some of the higher rated players from scoring, but it will prevent them from scoring most every time. This last point is huge, as well: DO NOT FOUL. Free throws are killers, don't give them up. If a guy has a dunk, let him dunk. And 1's build momentum. This goes back to what I was saying earlier about Controlling all aspects of your D. Occasionally the AI will jump to try and stop the dunk, which will result in a foul. Take control, and be diciplined down there. Backaway and get on offense.
I hope this helps, bro. It definetly has for me. -
