What signoficance do the points have?

Say I have 45,000 points and my opponent has 23,000 points but I'm leading 19-7. What I have more juice available? What I have more momentum?

Points are just for buying stuff, as far as I can tell. Whoever wins the match, gets the points they earned for their profile.
