Any rules junkies out there? Establish yourself in bounds, and GTFIH!

Hi Guys, a situation came up and I'm a little fuzzy on the whole "must establish himself in bounds before touching a live ball" rule.

    - Player A is dribbling up court on left side of court.

    - Opponent B approaches (right side of court to him), and tips ball away into the backcourt.

    - Opponent B's momentum carries him out of bounds as he continues towards ball.

    - Opponent B *clearly* establishes himself back in bounds while pursuing ball.

    - Opponent B picks up ball.

Is it legal? (my confusion comes in cause no one else touched the ball)

    Thanks in advance.

No, if the player goes out of bounds, another player would have to grab the ball before he is allowed to grab it.

Even if you clearly establish position in bounds, if you're the last one that touched it, you cannot legally regain possession until a teammate touches it first.

Isn't that the football rule. By this logic, a player can't be bumped out of bounds and receive a pass after being clearly back inbounds, which happens a lot in basketball. Just bringing the point of discussion.

No, that's not the case I'm making. If someone were to bump me out of bounds, and then I receive a pass, it would be different because my teammate was the first to touch the ball (because he passed it to me) before I re-entered the inbounds line.

It's really hard to explain, but think of it this way. When someone saves the ball from going out of bounds by diving out of bounds, they cannot reenter the court of play and touch the ball before another person touches it. Someone else has to touch it first.
