On The Fence | Live vs 2K

So I’d like to get a basketball game. Trouble is—I really can’t decide which game to get this year. From all I’ve read/heard, Live has made large strides in catching up to 2K.

I’ve played the Live demo, and in limited capacity—I was impressed. I love the ESPN integration and the arena/lighting was incredible.

I’m looking for just an overall FUN basketball game. Yes I want realism, but I don’t really run plays—outside of just calling for picks. I want a ‘franchise’ or season mode that is legit.

Not sure if this game has a ‘my player’ or what not mode—which I’d perhaps be interested in, but more interested in franchise/dynasty. I also think I saw where you CAN play as multiple teams in 2K but NOT in Live (in season/franchise mode)?

Also can both games create draft classes? It’s really a killer on Madden for me having to use generic rookies—as I am an avid NCAA fan.

Anyway, would love some feedback guys just on your thoughts. Really not looking to ‘bash’ either title, as they are both solid IMO.

    Thanks!

I'd say 2K. There's almost no end to the amount of fun you can have with that game, assuming you don't play online (which I don't).

No disrespect to Live or its fans, the game has made great strides but I think even their own staff will admit they still have some catching up to do. I'm looking forward to what Live '16 and '17 have to offer, but if I'm living in the moment I'm going with 2K.

and just to play devil's advocate, I much prefer Live. If you played Live 10, this reminds me very much of it.
For whatever reason, 2K does everything better, including realism, graphics, authenticity...but I constantly find myself going back to Live. It has nothing to do with the brand, it is just more fun.
      I couldn't describe it then, and I still can't.
The crowd is insane, the graphics are pretty good this time around, and it's overall more satisfying.
The franchise/dynasty mode isn't as in-depth, the career mode is pretty bare-bones, but it's just fun.

This is really what I'm looking for. I'm not a hardcore NBA enthusiast. I know most of the players and what not, but don't follow the NCAA too heavily either. I'm not looking to play 30 seasons, just want a decent franchise mode that is not overly difficult to play and a lot of fun.

And I must admit, the ESPN graphics are too tight. Saw a shot earlier with some stats from a Suns game and it looked like it was a screenshot from a real broadcast. Too cool IMO.

Depending on what you're looking for, both games have a lot to offer this year. 2k definitely wins out in terms of customization and modes. If you're big on franchise modes, you'll enjoy MyLeague. Customization options galore. Live does not allow custom rosters or player editing, and the options in Dynasty mode aren't as deep as 2k's.

Live easily wins out in terms of atmosphere and sounds. While you're playing the game, it feels like you're watching it live (no pun intended) on TV, simply because they did such a great job getting the arena sounds and crowd reactions. The ESPN integration is great as well.

For gameplay/graphics, it's your call; you're the only one who knows what you want, and everyone will react differently to both games on the court. I personally like the overall look of Live over 2k, although 2k does have some areas that look better than Live to me.

My advice would be to try and get your hands on both games somehow, and try both out before you make your decision. Live already plays much differently than release day, and most likely, the demo, due to the updates they've made. 2k has been fantastic this year when it comes to updating their rosters, so that's also something to consider if it's important to you.

So there's no editing players/rosters prior to starting a franchise?

Or you can't edit the above once the franchise mode has started?

Please, keep the feedback coming--it's much appreciated.

There's roster workarounds, but it's a pain in the behind. You can turn trade acceptance to manual, and make as many trades as you want.

              It's a pain, but workable.

This should probably go in the "other basketball games" forum...no?

Re: On The Fence | Live vs 2K

As far as tangible comparisons, the only area where Live beats 2K is the arenas and crowds. It's quite impressive what they've done with this. In every other tangible category 2K wins. Graphics, modes, depth, options and customization, etc...

The one thread that runs through the comments on this board is the intangible comparison that get repeated over and over. "Fun factor" is what you'll read. My initial reaction was that fun factor was a rationalization by die hard live fans. But it keeps coming up and if people are having a blast playing live that's a great thing.

I've played live for about 6 hours over three occasions at a friends but i don't own it. I have 2K. Buying live was never something i considered because i've generally been pleased with 2k for a long time now. I'm loving this years version but definitely eager for the upcoming patch so i can get deep into my league.

If you don't mind less modes and options, live just might be for you. You might become smitten with the fun factor like many others have, and fun is what it's all about, right? Perhaps you could rent it first?

If you want a deep game in which your going to feel like the money was worth the game get 2K. Live can be fun but damn this game is not deep. I'm sure if you play around the sliders on 2K you can get a fun casual gameplay experience.

                        Valuable feedback guys indeed.

For some reason I think I've talked myself into giving Live a shot this year.

2k hands down. NBA Live is still time traveling through space, as it has not touched down in 2014 yet. Thats a negative, by the way. I also believe comparative analysis is a strong weapon in the case of these two. Youtube them both and the difference will be stark, particularly in player movement.
