    Re: Game Tempo (NBA2k3)

Well lets look at it constructively.

Fast breaks were insane in 2k2. They made some good adjustments to tone them down but they effected the CPU in ways they probably didn't expect. I think this could be the easiest to fix if my latest find is true. They just include with their updates new team default settings for Game Tempo, Fast Breaks, and Crash Boards. All of the defaults are set really low.

As for the defense they clearly improved the WALL also known as stopping power to make it harder to juke your way by everyone. This hurts the CPU too b/c it makes it so freakin hard to get by a human defender as the CPU. Maybe this is why the default D stopping power is so low. I'm going to try lowering the stopping power all the way and just not use crossovers accept on fast breaks. Maybe this will let them score easier and get more easy points for them.

They increased the poewr of picks so plays would be run more but this makes the CPU D easy to cut up. This one I don't have any suggestions on at this point.

It's been awhile now sice I've played 2K3, but as I remeber, Dallas was fastbreaking me to death (AllStar level). Maybe it's just team specific...

Yeah, that's what I thought initally. The Mavericks and Hornets were playing in a cpu vs. cpu game, and I was just watching them play. This was in my season mode, and Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash were injured and Van Exel was running the point, but I was looking for fast breaks and they only had 2 on the evening. Same for Hornets. And the Mavericks didn't even get to the line once in the entire game. Maybe I'll just watch some more cpu vs. cpu games and see what happens from there.

Dallas did that to me too. It's definitely team specific but I think ALL the teams are too low. Dallas is the obvious one so you see it but borderline breaking teams like say Toronto don't break much at all. VC should bump them all up.

              wwharton,
The reason why you are not getting enough fouls and seeing enough free throws is because of your slider settings. AI Tendency should NOT be higher for outside and mid-ranged shots than the Dunk/Layup tendency. As you know, I have been adjusting sliders on watching CPU vs CPU since the game was released and I have almost finished my formula to seeing a highly realistic interpretation of an actual NBA game. Right now with my settings, I see between roughly 35% and 51% shooting from the floor. Scores range anywhere from 60 to 100 (blowouts and close games). I always see between 20 and 30 free throw attempts per team per game. Fouls seem about right except for absolutely no reach-in calls. The number of shooting fouls seems about right though.

I'll tell you some tips that I've found:

              1. absolutely MUST have difficulty on All-Star (otherwise won't see enough fouls)
              2. all shooting percentage sliders should be in the middle except dunk percentage. I'm sick of people saying to put layup percentage almost all the way up. I have been watching every nationally televised game this season since day one and see tons of blown layups and even dunks.
              3. my AI tendency sliders (from the middle):
              Close shot: +1
              Medium shot: +2
              3 pt shot: +1
              Dunk/Layup: +3

These sliders must be near the middle or else the CPU puts up shots too quick and you start seeing 110 FG attempts per game!

              4. Both awareness sliders and defensive stopping sliders all the way up.

              5. All fouls sliders all the way up EXCEPT charge/block. Charge/block should be about 2/3 of the way up. This is to see some charging fouls called in the game as well as blocking/shooting fouls.

              6. Dunk/Layup vs. Shot tendency about 2/3 the way up. More guys put it up strong by taking the quick shot from underneath the hoop rather than dunking the ball in (only Shaq does this ALL the time).

              7. Block sliders slightly to the right of middle.

              8. Steal sliders slightly to the left of middle.

              9. Ball handling slightly to the left of middle.

This is all off the top of my head so if I missed any sliders, forgive me. Watch a CPU vs. CPU game on 12 minute quarters and see what happens.

Fastbreaking is the only thing I know that I dont have right yet, but if you see any problems or suggestions other than this let me know. Make sure you have seen at least TWO full games on these settings before saying any opinions.

                A couple more I forgot..

                10. Dunk rating in the middle.

                11. Injury frequency slightly to the right.

Combine this stuff with wwharton's adjustments for fast break and defensive pressure on individuals and we may have a winner.

I'm confused. The whole point of my post was about the CPU fastbreaking and you say that's the only thing you don't have down, but your post is directed towards me. I don't have problems with seeing fouls or getting to the line at all. In fact I have no problem with your slider suggestions but I know everyone is different and have been doing just fine with my sliders. I just want the CPU to run on me a little more. Sorry if I confused you.

If you dont have problems seeing fouls and getting to the line, then why did you say so in the first message in this thread? I'm talking about getting the CPU to foul enough (shooting fouls, I mean).

lol, I see...you were talking about my stats for that game. I was just posting the stats and pointing out that the FTs were low. When I play against the CPU my fts are fine, that was just a CPU vs CPU game. I didn't think much of it b/c it was CPU vs CPU but commented b/c people complain about the fouls.

Sorry for the confusion...I wanted to focus on the gameplay without that one stat changing the thread into a problem with fouls which (like you said) isn't really a problem.

the game would be a lot harder if you didn't try to run fast break all the time. play a half court game with the occasional fast break like they really do in the nba

Just read this post now. Wish I read it when it was written!

This is similar to my post called the "overlooked X Factor'...which I guess wasn't so overlooked.

                          Excellent post wharton.

The difference is HUGE. I was using Seattle v the C's. Williams picked off Lewis, passed to Pierce in the open court...and he ran down and jammed it home!

Freaking cool...after weeks of playing this game and seeing Pierce stop mid court and pass to Vin Baker behind him.

                          Feels like a new game.

If anyone from sega reads these boards, can you get the freaking game right in the first place please. It would be appreciated if we could play a decent game without spending a month trying to fix up the bloody thing!

quote "The defaults in the game for ALL teams are lower than they should be IMO. This isn't talking about sliders, just the settings."

                            100% CORRECT.

The Nets and Jazz hardly had any difference in their game tempo's! It was WRONG.

Fixed...in my new season...the Nets are up and down fast, while Utah walk it up.
