what do you guys mean by realistic?

when you asy you want your game to be realistic what do you mean?

realistic total team pts in a game?

    FGA?

    Rebs?

    Blks? stls?

to me realistic means realistic FGA.

because you can get realistic stats in points in shorter quarters but there will be fewer attempts, leading to fewer rebounds, and fewer numbers on the other stats.

For me it's the overall package and not just on single aspect of the game.

For me it's a combination of realistic stat totals, player tendencies, and the visual representation.

Yes, the stat totals can be controlled by adjusting the quarter length, and that's fine with me. But the stats are still a bit out of whack. Here's the NBA team stat averages from last season:

      FGM/FGA: 36.2-81.3 (.445)
      3PM/3PA: 5.2-14.7 (.355)
      FTM/FTA: 17.9-23.8 (.752)
      OFF REB: 12.2
      TOT REB: 42.4
      AST: 21.9
      STL: 7.8
      BLK: 5.2
      TO: 13.8
      PF: 21.2
      PTS: 95.5

I have only played the demo so far, but it seems to me the FG% is way too high. I have practiced enough to limit the CPU fast breaks, but they still hit a high percentage of their outside shots. Also, even with good ball movement and shot selection, there are too many blocks and steals.

If EA toned down the blocking (both the frequency and over-the-top animation) and prevented players from getting steals with their backs turned, it would be a little more realistic. There need to be more deflections (on bad passes) and instead of blocks, players should be forced to alter their shot, dramatically reducing the chance of the shot going in. This would increase the rebounds and reduce the FG%.

As for player tendencies, I think Live is improving in that regard, but I hate seeing unathletic guys doing crazy spins and 360 degree dunks. It's just not "realistic".

Visually, the animations have improved a lot, and it seems like the players don't jump as high and stay in the air for as long as they did in the past.

Also one of my pet peeves in past Live's is the arena announcer mis-pronouncing the players names. They have the NBAPA license, at least say the names correctly. Not sure if this has been fixed in Live 2003 yet.

Re: what do you guys mean by realistic?

        Hoops City:

I agree with most of what you're saying, though using the 'hands-up' freestyle defense (up on your right analog) dramatically reduces the CPU's outside shooting percentage. If you're not already using it I highly recommend it. On superstar I can keep the CPU under 50% shooting most games.

Also, as far as this point goes:

As for player tendencies, I think Live is improving in that regard, but I hate seeing unathletic guys doing crazy spins and 360 degree dunks. It's just not "realistic".

I think Live does this best of any game out this year. I have not seen anyone doing any dunks they shouldn't be doing (though sometimes in traffic the dunks are too crazy) and the FS control really differentiates between Players with poor, average or excellent dribbling abilities. Try doing a basic spin move with a big man like Olowokandi or Curry and you will see what I mean. 2K3 is the worst offender for this, I have seen Fisher do a 360 in traffic (please) and big men can do the pivot dribbles/crossovers as well as guards.

Also, in regards to this pont:

Visually, the animations have improved a lot, and it seems like the players don't jump as high and stay in the air for as long as they did in the past.

You must be talking about 2K3. If not, if you think the Players in Live don't jump to dunk, try 2K3. The difference is laughable. The funny thing is, that in 2K3 the Players don't jump more than a foot off the ground when they dunk, yet the soar to chest-above-the-rim heights when they rebound...

I agree with you!! BTW, when a player is in the paint, he wants to shoot, how to stop him? I tried putting up hands but it doesn't works inside. They are shooting at 90% near the basket. I found it really hard to stop that in the game....... The only way to stop is block??

I NEVER have any problems with guys doing things they should not be able to do or guys doing crazy things in the paint or anything else for that matter because I can edit it so that it won't.

It seemed to me the days of players doing things they can't do in real life were over with the advent of the player edit but evidently some people still have this problem.

Re: what do you guys mean by realistic?

Hmm... I'll have to try the hands up a little more. I love that and the take charge button. Nice additions.

I posted earlier about the jumping in Live 2000. I created myself, 5-11, with 50 jumping and could still get my head up over the rim when jumping. The defender seems to get much higher than the shooter on block attempts. It's toned down a bit in 2003, but those swat blocks are just goofy.

As I said before, the jump attribute should equal their vertical leap in inches, plus the 50 point base. so Carter and Francis would be in the low 90's, and guys like Steve Kerr would be in the low 60s and not blocking Shaq.

is there a timing for putting the hands up?

i do this in superstar. it sledom works for me.

teach me pls how to use this. coz it doesnt work for me i always go for the block. coz i think there's i certain timing too in the block wherein you dont block the shot but chances are the shot will not go in.

I have started trying the hands up move and have already noticed a difference. Thanks for the tip!
