The Discreet Charm of Inside Drive

I was a sick in bed this weekend so I rented ID2003. I had played a little of ID2002 last year and was not all that impressed. Well I got the game Sunday night and have played 20 games since then. Wow. . .

Wait I can be more specific. The game reminds me visually of the Live games on the PSOne (I think they even have the same PA announcer). I don't mean it looks bad, I mean that there is a soft, almost painted quality to the graphics that I really enjoy. Also, I like the slightly darker lighting, it reminds me of the way NBA games looked on CBS in the 80's. Also, I may be wrong, but the animation seems buttery smooth. Nice.

The gamplay was the best surprise. This game is all about the Stars (I am glad Kobe has that little "star" next to his name all the time or I would forget that he should take most of the shots!), which is cool with me. You best players have to take most of the shots or you will lose. I had to tweak down the speed and ability of the players to cross-over dribble past 2 or 3 men every trip down the floor, but overall I am impressed. I mean when you see Houston or Ray Allen come off a baseline screen square up, catch and shoot in one fluid motion it is exciting and feels very real.

And after 3 years of play NBA 2k is not as challenging as it once was. Even with Arenas' excellent sliders I am still able to beat the CPU down on All-Star 99% of the time. With ID I lost my first 8 games. Badly. It was great.

Really I find the game charming and very inviting. It makes me feel the way I felt watching basketball when was a child- warm and completely enraptured. I feel much more involved then I do when playing NBA2k3. 2K3 is great, but it can start to feel a bit robotic and, relatively, sterile. With ID I really feel like it is up to me to use my players well, while in 2K I feel less in control- esp. when rebounding. Plus ID has a number of little touches that add a lot to the gameplay. For example I really like the fact the ID tracks player achievements. I mean Tyson Chandler (I use the Bulls) may not get a lot of double-doubles, but I am glad I will be able to track them. Also the commentary is still making me laugh.

Anyway I advise all you Xbox owners to give ID a chance this year. You may be in for a treat. I for one will be picking it up this week.
And a fanboy is born. . .Anyway has anyone else picked up an old school vibe from this game?

i must agree with ya. this game is very impressive. if you're a fan of true sim bball, this game does it for you. what i truely is how the stars are used in this game. like you said, the star players take most of the shots. i was, lucky, beating the Celtics by 15 with 1.:30. to go. Pierce and Walker were pullng 3's like there were not tomorrow. the best thing about it, they were off of set plays!!! remarkable.

commentaries is the best i've heard in a game to date. telling you things like what a player is really good at doing (ex: MJ can hit that fadeaway aaaall day.), to how many blocks a player currently has.

don't deprive yourself of a truely great bball experience...
I am glad I got the Buell- I love riding it, I love the oddball looks I get on the road- I love people asking "What IS that thing?" I love flying into a corner WAY too hot, scared spitless and sure I'll never hold it at this speed- and hearing the bike whisper "Sissy!"...

Yes, I would go so far to say that between the 3 man booth, the stat/trend overlays, and the achievements updates (another thing that makes me feel deeply involved with what is happening on the court) ID has the best IN-GAME presentation I have seen in a while . For example I love the way the play-by-play guy is always apologizing to MJ for cutting him off. It kills me. I am sure it will get old soon enough but for now it leaves me grinning. Anyone agree?

It makes each game feel unique somehow. And the light tone of it all feels great for basketball. I guess if 2K3 is an ESPN broadcast, ID is a TNT broadcast.

And again I am not asking who things ID is "the best sim"- I just want to know who likes (or hates) the "feel" of it- and why.

I don't know who had last year's version, but Kevin Calabro saying apologizing to MJ was in it. It didn't quite get old, but I just learned to ignore it. I do like the commentary in the game. MJ gets all the funny lines. I was playing last night, and I the CPU scored 3 straight times down and MJ says (in a walkie talkie voice) Defense, Defense, paging the Defense, come in!"
Funny stuff. I also like that you can run a smooth fastbreak without the players stopping.

Well, I think ID 2003 is the best sim. It definitely has the best feel of NBA basketball. I think the 3-man booth is hilarious as well. For instance, the line, "Like Fagan, you've got to pick a pocket or twoooooo! Please sir, may I have some more?" made me laugh. It definitely has that lighthearted tone TNT broadcasts have, and it's just a real pleasure to play.

Something I just found out when I was just playing ID 2003: this game has offensive goaltending! I don't think I've ever seen a b-ball game implement offensive goaltending, only defensive goaltending. So that was a nice surprise to see.

What really differentiates ID 2003 from NBA 2k3 to me is that ID 2003 tries to include as much of the NBA rulebook as possible into the game. NBA 2k3's is a bit more selective and some of their rules such as blocking fouls are wrong or improperly implemented. I hope they fix it for NBA 2k4, because I really do like that franchise as well. Dribbling the ball should feel like you're in control of the basketball, and any mistake you make will cost you. ID 2003 has that feel right, IMHO. If you get careless with the ball and dribble into traffic or into a defender, or just try to run past a player, the ball will get stolen a lot of times.

While NBA 2k3 increased the amount of reaching in, it still seems somewhat limited to when you do crossovers and stuff. They just don't reach in that often.

Still, ID 2003 isn't perfect. They need to tone down the pushing fouls somewhat and they need to increase the number of trips to the line. Other than that, I just can't believe how good the game is.

Re: The Discreet Charm of Inside Drive

The first time I got a charging foul because I ran into a defensive player from behind while holding down the turbo trigger was amazing.

So I know what you mean with the control thing- I lost the ball a dozen times my first game because I stopped moving to call a play and the defender just reached out and took the ball. Excellent.

More trips to the line would be good. . . which reminds me I also really like the free throw system in ID. Very hard to hit the FT with Shaq. Very hard.

And I have not seen any offensive goaltending calls yet- but I will be on the look out for them. .

And really I do not think ID looks all that realistic- but it proves the point that a game, even a sports game, does not have to mimic "reality" to feel real. As long as it creates and maintains consistent "game world" (The Nintendo Theory)- the feeling of realness will be there. This I think is what makes ID so appealing to me- I feel like I am entering a different world - NBA World I guess. This is something 2k3 lacks, in my opinion.

I agree, while these are not 2k3 graphics by no means, the gameplay and AI more than make up for it. I just like the fact that I have to think about what I am going to do on offense AND defense. One wrong decision could be the difference between a squeaker and a blowout. BTW I have no real problems with 2k3.
