Chris Broussard: Age rule is paternalism/racist
He did this rant on classic now claiming that the league is assuming they know more about what's best for the teenager than are the teenagers. He complained its condascending--paternalism. He pointed to the NHL and how no such age restriction exists. He claimed that the bottom line was whether or not the rule was "fair". OK, does anyone think it matters what the NHL does? Does it matter that the NBA is not the NHL? Would Chris prefer the NBA to be on the Outdoor Living Network? What does the NHL have to do with anything? Why is it that jokers like Chris Broussard always ignore the fact that each league has the power to look out for its own product in their own way. Its not all about this notion of "fairness" as he claims it is. Why are these guys constantly allowed to frame/misframe the issue?Tags: None -

Especially now with the NBDL I'm against the age restriction. The NHL drafts teenagers but you will seldom see an 18 year old kid in the league. They usually get returned to their junior team or get sent to the minors. NBA teams could just send their HS picks to the NBDL if they don't produce at the NBA level or don't get the chance. Basically what the Celtics did with Gerald Green before he recently got called up.
What Stern (and to an extent what the Players Union) has done is basically protect GM's from themselves. It's pretty simple if these HS kids aren't ready for the NBA, than GM's should stop drafting them. It's that simple. But you know what, they can't resist it.
I have a take on the racial aspect of the age restriction but since race isn't allowed to be discussed on this site I won't post it.Comment

Re: Chris Broussard: Age rule is paternalism/racist
I see no problem with the age limit, because for every kobe, tmac and Kg there are about 10 kwame browns
Its not like they said you need to be 22, what is one year of college going to do?
If you look at most high school players who enter the league their first year is spent mostly on the bench anyway so why not put them in college? How will this be 'bad' for the player.“It’s so senseless to me to say he shouldn’t take over like that. You give the same amount of shots to everybody else and they’re not making that many, I know it.”Comment

Re: Chris Broussard: Age rule is paternalism/racist
If you make coffee tables and you think the sales would be better if you used a different type of wood that would make the coffee tables more appealing, wouldnt you change the type of wood you used? How is this any different? How is the NBAs situation different? The NBA is obviously trying to make itself more appealing to a broader demographic. It's purely economic. In such a scenario it's not even safe to assume that the league gave any consideration to race.
And, btw, if he's going to make comparisons to hockey, then is it unfair that NBA salaries are so high? Is he making an argument that Garnett makes too much money? Broussard would probably tell you that he makes that because thats what the market dictates which is an observation of economics. So then why overlook the economics of it elsewhere?Last edited by glucklich; 02-09-2006, 12:53 PM.Comment
