If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
I'm curious to see what direction people think these games should go in...I would do the most with 2K4 because there's already a lot there to work with. The eye candy, bells and whistles, are there, but the on the court action is where it needs to be improved.Tags: None -
Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
NBA 2K3 being the only game I have played extensively, I would take it over. To start, I would have the game difficultly be defaulted on pro level to just about what 2K3 is with arenas' slider settings. Rookie would be a level that some people would actually play, I don't know anybody who gets a sports game and puts it on rookie/freshman/whatever it is called, it's just too easy. So pro should be a pretty good challange. Next I would change the sliders to USER vs CPU rahter than home vs away, that was just an absolutely horrible idea, if it gets to the point where the user needs to give the CPU an advantage for the games to beclose, that means they would have to change it every game, I cannot understand the logic behind that decision by Sega.
That's options, as for actual gameplay......
Make the post game possible. The game needs to realize that if ANY PF/C in the leauge is backing down Tony Parker, it should be an easy dunk, I understand the need to make it hard to be effective in the post, but the game should recognize a mismatch, and Shaq should be able to handle just about anybody without a double team. Next, the cpu MUST be better at recognizing open shots/mismatches, the post about 2K3 vs ID's computer AI said it all, if you give a three point shooter(even if he's a PF, A. Walker) open looks, he will take it. And if Shaq is being guarded inside by a PG, they should give him the ball. The AI is pretty decent as it is, but it needs to recognize any advantages it has.
FInally, franchise mode. Clean up the cap/money system. You shouldn't be able to resign guys if you are already 200 "points" over the limit, if you do, you should have to pay luxary tax on top of your payroll. And don't make it so that all of the teams are over the cap to start the game, I don't know the details of the NBA cap, but I"m pretty certain that there aren't 25 or so teams are over the cap. Make the training results more obvious, don't jump stragiht from the training screen to the preseason, show us what the training did. Make guys come from high school to the draft, I know the leauge isn't a huge fan of this, but it is a reality, a handful every year, and now they are starting to become #1 overall picks, the game should 18 year olds coming into the leauge. Can't remember is this is in the game or not, but there should be an All Rookie team at hte end of the year.
Well that's probably a little more info than you wanted, but that is what I would do if I had control over developing NBA 2K4. -
Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
I agree with you.
I would allow people in College BB 2k3 (when it's actually GOOD and the ungodly amount of flaws are gone) to edit the names and they would stay the same in NBA 2k4.
I'd give it a more NBA like experience. If the team is bad and has a 3-30 record, the place is gonna be dead and silent. But if that same team suddenly goes to a 40-30 record, then the arena starts to fill up.
PLAYER EDITOR...FULL...FROM HEAD TO GOD DAMNED TOE AND EVERY DAMN STAT CAN BE TOGGLED WITH. Period.
In the sliders, I would have like 10 different pre-set sliders such as a "d wins" slider and "offense wins" slider and something that takes the stress off people spending 6 days playing the game till they can find a happy medium.
Sliders are the reason I wont buy any more sports games....until hey can make a game that is close to real life...thern I wont support EA, SEGA, TECMO, Microsfot...anyone.,Comment

If I was in charge of 2K4 I'd copy ID's AI.
If I was in charge of ID2004 I'd copy 2k3's presentation.

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
That's odd because sliders are the reason that I have been playing sports games now more than ever. In older games, one level would be hard at first, but get easy as it went on, and either a)that was the hardest level and you would never lose again or b)the next level up had an insane amount of CPU cheating that it was rediculous to try to play it. Sliders have allowed for a happy medium, I can make a game hard, but not too hard that I never win, it's probably the best addition to sports games along with franchise modes in the last few years.Comment

If i were in charge of the NBA2k4 i would only change 2 main things....1: Rosters.
2:Players Shots- Me personally i would spend most of time perfecting everybody's individual jumpshot, this would make the game a lot more difficult and would really add competition to EA's freestyle control..........oh well thats me...

Ah, this topic is like a dream come true for me. Here is what I would do with NBA 2k4:
-Dunks and easy shots will RARELY be missed, not 5-10 times a game.
-Re-do the passing and take out maximum passing.
-Add 2-3 more difficulty levels.
-ESPN Top 10 Plays of the week!!!!!!!
-More and better camera views.
-A stlye of Freestlye control.
-Better 3 points %'s.
-Better looking and sounding crowds.
-Better animations.
-MOST IMPORTANT: The Defense of the opposing team is not that good, dont have it like Live, but dont have the force field, something in between.
Might sound like I dont like NBA 2k3, but i do, but it has a lot of things that needa be fixed.Comment

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
Do you watch b-ball games? Because I've seen plenty of blown layups and quite a few blown dunks. Especially if a team's fatigued and has played the previous night. NBA 2k3 is fine in this area, IMHO. And so is ID 2003. They both have this right as far as I'm concerned. I think both need some improvement in their defense. I actually think NBA Live 2003 has the best d out of all of them, because the AI will actually pressure the ball many times at half court. They'll trap players and try to force turnovers. ID 2003 does this to an extent as well. NBA 2k3 does none of this. NBA 2k4 needs to implement proper defensive AI, while ID 2004 needs some tweaking for more ball pressure as well as adding momentum into the game. Just about everyone seems to be able to run at a moment's notice, which shouldn't be the case. I think Live 2003 has the best player movement out of the three. They're not too sluggish but they're not too fast either. it just seems right. At least, this is my impressions so far. Passing needs to be slowed down a bit in ID 2004 and NBA Live 2004. Shot arcs should be higher in NBA Id 2004 and shot arcs should be lower in Live 2004. Live 2004 and NBA 2k4 need to improve their offensive AI. I want to see players come off of screens and get wide open jumpshots and stuff, just like in the NBA. ID 2003 has this right, IMHO. I want to see the user be able to defend in Live 2004. That's all I can think of right now.Comment

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
No, I don't think the Grandtheftauto guy watches basketball or has even played too much.
The main thing that I would do is add more player individualaliy and team individualality. Example: Philly vs Kings
During big plays Webber and Iverson should be hyped and show it on the court. Iverson should be damn near impossible to hold one-on-one and should have several cross-overs and dekes that no one else on the game should have, plus he should have a quick release. AI should be able to get plent of space off of simple dekes or at least fouls.
Webber should have a host of dekes (post moves mainly) and a few dribble moves, but nothing to special. His fakes won't get him as open as much, but he should have a shot that he can simply just shoot over his man.
In another word, the moves that AI have should not be the same moves that Webber have period. This would also add more gameplay and depth to the game because when playing with different teams one would have to really know what each player is capable of doing.
What world do you live in?Comment

Read the topic. These posts aren't about comparisons, they're about what improvements need to be made for all 3 games. However, comparisons are inevitable in order to provide examples. That's all.Comment

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
I agree with most people here, it's all about the AI. Making the game unique for each player is something that will probably be addressed to counter EA's Freestyle Control, so I'm not worried about that, we should see new, position specific moves(if not player specific) next year. But the main place NBA 2K4 needs to work on is the AI. Offensive and defensive. Take advantage of mismatches on offense(as well as continue to feed hot players, even if they aren't the superstars) and on defense, have a better use of double teams and full/half court traps. Sega should work on AI, I think the little bells and whistles(created player limit, franchise problems, ect) will all get taken care of, but they may be slow in responding to AI issues.Comment

Yes I do watch basketball, but I have never seen so many missed layups and dunks in a game, I understand the layups, but too many dunks are missed. Also shots that are 2 inches away are shot too hard, sometimes it is just dumb; for example, Shaq missed 4 straight dunks! That does NOT happen. BTW dont be so dam overprotective, I love the game and basketball, NEVER say someone has not watched basketball before just because they say something you dont agree with.

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
Uh, I never said you didn't. I was just questioning whether you did. Never stating you didn't, because I honestly don't know whether you do watch b-ball games or not. Shaq missing 4 dunks in a row, well it depends on the situation, IMHO. By the way, if you caught some games featuring some pretty tired teams or some pretty bad teams, you'd see plenty of wide open missed layups and quite a few missed dunks. It's just the nature of the game, IMHO. The better finishers will naturally miss fewer layups and dunks, but they still miss them. Besides, if the number of missed dunks/layups is not to your liking you can always adjust that. Dunking in traffic and laying the ball up in traffic should cause you to miss quite a few though. If a team has gone really cold, that means that they might not even hit a single layup. ID 2003 has this too, and I think it's right how they did this.Comment

Re: If You Were In Charge Of NBA 2K4, Live 2004, or ID 2004, what would you do?
I lik NBA 2K3, I think it's the best b-ball game out once you get make some adjustments. But it is VERY hard to defend the number of missed dunks/layups/2-footers. The only reason I think they miss so many is to keep the score/FG% down. If you don't like the # of misses, the sliders can fix it, but once you dump up the slider, you will get scores in the 140's and 60% FG shooting. I'd rather have a more realistic game with the slight annoyance of so many missed layups/dunks than get the unrealistic stats. It really is the user's choice, bump up the slider so you don't miss them and turn down the quarter length if you don't like it, but realize that it is a simulation video game, it can't be perfect, but the most important thing is not how realistic each individual shot is, but how realistic the overall outcome and stats are.Comment
