They play that in the arena. The indiana jones parody with Avery Johnson is alot better.

SAN ANTONIO – It was a long night for Mavericks center DeSagana Diop. His pride was hurt when he was benched in favor of Erick Dampier to start Monday's Game 7.

Then, when Diop got into the game, coach Avery Johnson and veteran guard Darrell Armstrong yelled at him for not showing enough energy.

With Dampier and Keith Van Horn fouled out, Diop suffered a broken nose on the first play of overtime while guarding Tim Duncan.

Diop survived it all and made several key plays in overtime of the Mavericks' 119-111 defeat of the Spurs at AT&T Center.

"Hey, I broke my nose, and I got a W, that's good," said Diop, who finished with seven points, four rebounds and two blocks in 10 minutes.

Johnson started Diop for a good portion of the regular season and the playoffs.

But with the season on the line, Johnson benched him for the veteran Dampier, then used Van Horn as the first big man off the bench.

"First quarter seemed long to me," Diop said. "I guess because I wasn't out there until after the first quarter. I thought it was halftime."

In the second quarter, Diop hit a basket to push the Mavericks' lead to 60-41. Then he had a block on Duncan and later two offensive rebounds.

          Armstrong helped get Diop started.

"I told him to get that look off his face," Armstrong said. "When he walked out there he looked like he messed up, and we told him get yourself together and we need your energy."

Diop played four minutes in the first half and had four points, one block and two rebounds.

At the end of regulation, Diop hit Duncan's arm, and Duncan failed to get off a shot. Dirk Nowitzki also defended as the buzzer sounded.

In overtime, Diop suffered a broken nose when Duncan's elbow went flying into his face. But Diop didn't seem affected.

He blocked a Duncan shot, then scored on a two-handed dunk, off a feed from Jason Terry, to give the Mavs a 108-106 lead.

Diop grabbed one of the biggest rebounds of the game when Terry rushed a long jumper with one second left on the shot clock. Diop snatched the offensive rebound, was fouled and after making one of two foul shots, the Mavericks led 115-110.

At the end of the evening, Diop's physical presence on Duncan was noted not only in the box score but in the locker room.

Duncan went 1-of-7 from the field in overtime while Diop ended up with three points, two rebounds, a block and a broken nose.

"Diop came in and gave us big minutes," Johnson said

That was his problem in Cleveland...kids got a ton of talent, but his ego is fragile as hell. The Cavs never gave him the PT to really build some confidence. Good kid though, i'm glad he's doing well.

I have to give him credit he's totally chnaged my opinion of him after seeing him this year in Dallas. I use to think he was no better than Mel Turpin was in Cleveland. In Dallas the Diop has really surprised me by the way he got in shape and it's made him a very good shotblocking big man.

                        Re: LOL! Diop Diop

We all know Diop's story. His career was on life support when he was labeled persona non grata in Cleveland after last season and the Mavericks raised eyebrows when they signed him to a 3-year, $6.5 million contract in the offseason. The oft-overweight Diop shed 30 pounds over the summer and came to camp in shape and ready to be the type of player scouts anticipated he would be: a powerful shot-blocker with unlimited defensive potential.

He became just that, starting 45 games for the Mavericks (his previous career total was five) and establishing himself as a feared defensive presence. That money the pundits claimed Dallas was wasting? Well, Diop has gone toe-to-toe with Pau Gasol and Tim Duncan and guess who is still standing?

Diop wasn't supposed to play against Phoenix. He was supposed to carve out for himself a nice spot on the bench -- preferably one right beside Erick Dampier -- just so Avery Johnson doesn't have to look far if he needs some help assisting an injured player to the locker room (you ever wonder who chooses those guys? You never see Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce doing the human crutch thing with a teammate. On the other hand a guy like Wang Zhi-Zhi practically qualifies as a med student).

This series Diop has been as advertised: he has forced, by one reporter's count, a half dozen shot adjustments and is a walking discouragement (3 blocks) for Phoenix's slashers to make their way down the lane. Sure, he's, well, offensively challenged. But in a lineup that boasts six players capable of scoring 20 or more points, Diop's offense becomes a disposable commodity. "I know why I'm in there," Diop told SI earlier this season. "Rebound. Defend. Block shots. You see how many scorers we have? Why would they need me to do more than that?"

There's another reason to like Diop. Spin it forward for a moment and assume Dallas holds off the Suns and advances. Detroit has a rotating arsenal of solid bigs and Miami still has one Shaquille O'Neal playing in South Beach. Regardless of who comes out of the East, interior defense will be a hot commodity.

That's Diop's calling card. That's about the only thing he can do.

I'll ask you: am I overrating Diop, whose bandwagon I have been riding since he stepped into the Mavericks starting lineup earlier this year? Is he an effective player? Or are we witnessing the emergence of the next Ike Austin?
