McDyess' knees can't go starter minutes and I don't think Jason Maxiel or anyone else can really step in. I don't remember what Detroit got for Darko and Carlos. So I'm wondering what you guys think.

Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
I was just thinking today about what would happen if the Pistons loose. I imagine that Joe D. would find that unacceptable (I personally think that Rasheed could become trade bait). Ben Wallace's contract is also up and I think that there is no way Detroit maxes him out. A max deal somewhere else would be hard to pass up. So what happens if Detroit loses one of them?

No one wants Rasheed. He's overrated, is a crybaby and still has 3 years left on his new deal I believe at close to 10 million.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
They made a huge mistake. Anyone who knows basketball can see Darko is ridiculously talented in just two trips up and down the floor. But it is fine with me. As long as Hill gets his head out of his ***, I will love watching Howard and Darko as a frontline for the next 10 years.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
Dumars is pretty much in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. If Darko flourishes in Orlando, people will say he made a mistake. However, if he doesn't live up to his potential, people will say he made a mistake drafting him when he could have taken Anthony or Wade. Given the latter scenario, Dumars would be better off if Darko suceeded. After all, the Pistons aren't going to fall off the face of the planet over the next couple of seasons, and a consistantly good Darko would actually make Dumars look somewhat vindicated for having the stones to pick him number two overall, even if his game came to life with a different franchise.Comment

The Darko move was to take on enough expiring money to be able to keep Ben Wallace.Listen to The Remodeling Clay Podcast!

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
The Darko move was a Bill Davidson move. Davidson has a longstanding stance against going over the luxury tax. Signing Ben Wallace without unloading some salary this off-season would've meant going over that luxury tax. There's also been rumors since the summer that the guys writing the checks are not excited about paying Ben Wallace his market value this off-season considering his age and declining game.Originally posted by Clay_OSThe Darko move was to take on enough expiring money to be able to keep Ben Wallace.
I've sort of followed the episode and anything relating to it and it appeared to me that Dumars was caught in a tough position. He felt that he wasn't going to be allowed to give Ben the money it was going to take to keep him if it meant going over the luxury tax. Davidson wasn't going to break his longstanding rule relating to the luxury tax if it meant paying a crap-load of money to both Ben and Darko when one would be getting paid for doing nothing and the other was going to be over-paid based on his age and based on the way the game changed.
So Dumars had a call to make. Let Ben go and break up the best starting five in the league to let Darko develop...or if he wasn't going to make room for Darko to develop he had to dump him. Let's not forget that amazing start Detroit had without much help from the bench. Dumars felt he had no choice but to go with Ben and dump Darko. Even after the trade Dumars said that Darko would be putting up 18, 10 and 3 blocks with Orlando and was going to take heat for letting him go.
In hindsight, nobody could've predicted the Pistons implosion. Nobody would've predicted that the NBA would get more touchy with the foul calls in the playoffs than they were in the regular season as opposed to it being the other way around like it's been for years. Nobody would've predicted that Ben Wallace would get into public spats with Flip Saunders, that he'd shoot about 20% from the free-throw line, and that his numbers would drop drastically in all areas during the playoffs.
What I did predict was that Darko is the perfect center for the new NBA. A face-to-the-basket center has a lot more value in today's league than he did in the league 10 years ago. The NBA is no longer about bruising people in the post. It's about breaking down defenses and moving the ball -- two things that Darko is supposed to be above average at for a 7 footer. Darko can still post up smaller players but take the big guys off the dribble. He's a good passer and a good mid-range shooter.
Based on what Darko showed in Orlando, the new NBA rules, and what Ben has regressed to under Flip...I'd trade Darko for Ben straight up right now. I'm still in awe that LB and Flip made such a talented 7 footer so worthless that all Detroit could get for him was a mid to late 1st round pick two drafts away. It's just too bad that Dumars was under the gun to rush a decision because not getting rid of Darko would've been a decision that he wouldn't be able to re-sign Ben. You'd hope that Davidson would've been a little more lenient than that with his luxury tax rules considering this team was contending for a Chamionship.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
Funny someone mentioned the draft, because Carmelo or Wade just wouldn't make the Pistons better IMO.
Also, you have to wonder, if they got Melo, then would Prince get as much shine time he has? I think as of how Prince has been playing, he is better than Melo.Comment

If Detroit didn't take Darko, they would've either traded the pick or drafted Bosh. That's not just my opinion. I assumed all that based on hints of what Joe wanted to aquire during that entire season but ESPN Insider basically went into that entire situation after Darko was traded.Originally posted by Leahmic223Funny someone mentioned the draft, because Carmelo or Wade just wouldn't make the Pistons better IMO.

Dumars was actually very high on Bosh and almost decided to take him over Darko. Melo was not a Dumars type of player at the time. I'll admit that Melo has grown up a lot since then and is now a legit All Star IMO but at the time of the workouts, he was out of shape and showed a bad attitude.
The other thing to consider is that the NBA was a much different league at that time. At the time, All Star post players had almost twice the value as All Star perimeter players. The NBA still allowed hand-checking, allowed big men to be more physical challenging shots, and allowed a zone. In the playoffs things only worsened when refs would swallow their whistles.
Big men were vital in that environment. At the same time the implementation of the zone really reduced the value of slashers. It's why Wade's value was so low in comparison to his value today. People forget that while Wade was very good as a rookie, he exploded the following year when the rules changed...along with Steve Nash, Arenas, and other perimeter slashers.
Dumars built his teams around the rules of the game. He said the reason for trading Stackhouse for Rip was because of the zone defenses. Rip could score in a zone where as someone like Stackhouse was going to have his effectiveness greatly reduced.
Now Detroit's greatest issue is that they don't have a pure slasher who can break down defenses. Today's NBA rules favor slashers while the rules of two years ago favored post players.
What I still hate though is that Dumars traded a 7 footer who will fit in nicely with these new rules. My guess is that Darko will be better than either Wallace within two years once he figured out how these rules allow him to attack the basket anytime he wants.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
lol @ onebadmutha...that's two essays you wrote in this thread.
anyways I'm not sure if I can see the rules and breaking down defense type of play in the nba. I see more flash, sponsorships, big names, trends, referee conspiracies, david stern basketball than actual basketball.
These playoffs have been a lot better than I thought, but the nba has a good ways to go if they want to get back to old fashioned basketball. Get rid of the front office, get new refs, and forget all the advertising.
but to answer the thread, I think darko is in the right place. I hated seeing him on the bench, it was a perfect excuse for people to bag on darko and call him a fluke when he bearly ever got to show what he's made of.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
I cannot stress enough how much the Pistons must find a way to rid themselves of Rasheed. If they can do that, IMO, giving Ben a big deal is more feasible.Comment

Re: Did Joe D. Make a Mistake Trading Away Darko?
Wade , Carmello, Bosh and Hinrich would have made Detroit a better team.
They really could have used either player this series. Also a GM has to play chess sometimes with his picks, meaning he has to get a player sometimes just for the future and to keep them away from the competition.
Why send Darko to ORLANDO and not in the west somewhere?
Atleast the Lakers sent Shaq to the west coast.
I know what ifs mean nothing but the Pistons were supposed to have a DYNASTY and it looks already in DECLINE.
Wade or Carmello would have fit this team, they had no choice going against BIG BEN!!!!!Comment
