Not all of these deals are cap busters for their teams, but any GM who takes on one of these contracts is either a John Daily esque gambler or insane. I was going to take a shot at Zeke here, but that would be prosaic.
The numbers here are rough estimates of what is still remaining on the contract of these players, please correct any errors I might have made, and of course dessenting opinions are welcome.
Honorable Mentions:
Jamal Crawford- 5yr/43mil- Only on the Knicks could his deal be considered
an attractive one.
Antoine Walker- 5yr/46mil- If there were 2 years left on his deal it would be
ok, but 5 years left on a 12/5 guy who hits 30 this summer
is...
Shaquille O'Neal- His career speaks for itself, he has the trophy, 1 or 2 more
and the deal was more than worth it, but 4yr/80mil- for a
injury prone, 34 year old Center is a dicey proposition.
Adonal Foyle- 4yr/37mil- Edged out by his teammate Dunleavy only
because I didn't want 4 offensively challenged Centers
listed in a row.
The Top Ten
#10. Mike Dunleavy- 4yr/37mil- The light may still come on for Mike, but he
had best be saving his money up, because he won't
see a better contract than this for the rest of his
career.
#9. Tyson Chandler- 5yr/55mil- Career scoring average 7pts/game. Ah,
to be 7ft tall and have a modicum of coordination.
#8. Samuel Dalembert- 5yr/52mil- See Tyson Chandler.
#7. Eric Dampier - 5yr/50mil- "Hey Tyson, Samuel keep up the good
work, and you'll get another phatty deal just like you
have now. Its good to be tall"
#6. Darius Miles- 4yr/34mil- The numbers aren't that bad, but there
are some other... issues at play. Is Darius really only
24? It seems like he's been killing coaches for 15
years now.
#5 Carlos Boozer- 4yr/47mil- Like Darius, its not about the numbers, but
when you have a reputation as a backstabber, and a
malingerer, teams are going to be hesitant about
bringing you into the fold.
#4. Steve Francis- 3yr/49mil- Still hasn't gotten over being separated
from his boy Cutty Mobes. Hey Franchise, I know you
guys were tight, but come on dude, turn the page.
#3. Stephon Marbury-3yr/60mil- You know how some players are glue
guys, guys who bring cohesion and chemistry to a
squad. Well Starbury isn't one of those guys. Who
would Knicks fans rather have, native son Step, or
Frenchy Tony Parker. I think you know, mon ami.
#2. Kenyon Martin- 5yr/70mil- Warrior spirit in "Mr. Glass" body. 16/9,
1 block, guy when he's on, is that good enough? I
guess, but you want a 14 mil a year guy to bring
some leadership, intangibles, be better than a career
47% shooter from the PF position, and feel free to
not get suspended for conduct detrimental during the
playoffs.
#1 Zach Randolph- 5yr/73mil- Pluses- Can be a 20/10 guy when he's on
Minuses- Another PF who shoots below 48% for his
career. Bar none the worse Black Hole in the League
The next time he guards someone will be the first.
Hasn't blocked a shot since 9th grade. Still
struggling to come back from mircofracture surgury.
Now for a couple of understatements about Zach.
Has difficulty accepting coaching, and has made
some questionable off the court decisions.
