    Len Bias---what could have been

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvyHX...related&search=

Growing up, I got into sports kinda late. Most of the kids I grew up with were sports fans, but me being a military brat, moving from place to place, it took a while for me to settle in and play/watch sports like most boys my age. My family moved to Maryland in 1983 when I was 10, so I was in the middle of ACC/Big East country, but, even though I knew of the great teams of that time, I missed out on seeing Patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan, and Len Bias in their college years (I got into the NBA first in 1985, then really got into the NCAA in the late 80's when Mourning and Mutumbo were at G'town).

So, it was fascinating to see this clip of Len Bias. Damn, he was a BEAST! MJ is and will ALWAYS be my fave, but...wow. Bias could have been right up there with him, and could have made a great rivalry in the late 80's/early 90's. I wish ESPN Classic would show some of these classic games from back in the day more often.

My mind just can't comprehend the unbelievable accolades that team (Celtics) could have achieved with the greatest lineup to ever step the floor.

    86-87 Celtics:

    C - Parish
    PF - McHale
    SF - Bird
    SG - Bias
    PG - Johnson
    6 - Ainge

Later they would add REGGIE LEWIS!!!

Those teams (with Bias, and Lewis) would have averaged easily 130+ points per game, along with 60+ rebounds a game... probably 600+ Blocks a year too... they would be the greatest ever, with the 95-96 Bulls in a far 2nd.

Wow, those are the first clips I've seen of Len Bias. Too bad the drugs got hold of him, he could have been great.

In that video, look at the 1:49 mark. His head is at the rim and his arms extend well above. Amazing.

Maybe not better than MJ, but seems to have had the potential to be right up there.

                Sad.

Re: Len Bias---what could have been

I grew up in DC and Len Bias was god like back in the days. That guy was flat out sick.

Too bad he got caught up with some of DC's most rutheless drug lords back then celebrating his NBA draft selection.

But Bias was off the charts in terms of pure atheletic ability. Lefty (the Coach) just didn't care who his guy's were involved with back in those days off the courts. But Big John Thompson he would tell the drug dealers to stay the hell away from his players.

You wish. Firstly, if they went on to become as good as you would have liked them to be, what makes you think the rest of that history would be the same as this history? It's probable that Reggie Lewis would have never put on a Celtics uniform.

Here's the fact. Len Bias WAS a great college player. That by NO means he would've been a great NBA player period.

It sucks that the guy is gone. Yeah he would have been an NBA player, but that's all you really know for sure. Anything beyond that is wishful thinking. Whether or not he would have been great or not is a mystery. Look at all the great college players with exceptional talent who went on to have ho-hum NBA careers. Sam Bowie, Kwame Brown, Bo Kimble, Glen Robinson, Joe Smith, John Konkak, Shawn Bradley, Randy White, Marc Macon, and the list goes on and on and on. It's just as likely that Bias would have ended up on that list. The NBA is a different game and not everyone makes the transition well, even the great college players.

I am not hating on Bias, he was a great college player, and I can even understand the wishful thinking on how great he could have been. I just can't stand when people compare his possible career to other players who had real careers and worked hard for whatever respect in the game they got. If you are gonna do that then you should also recognize the opposite side of the NBA coin enough to consider the possibility that he might have been another Chris Washburn. Who? Exactly.

Sorry to bring this old topic up, but was doing a search and for some reason this came up.

As for my arguement, and your post to disagree, I agree with you too. It's just fun to take a look, but I wasn't trying to pull a teebone (check the Duncan vs. Shaq thread).
