MJ: "The kids today, they are being given things that they haven’t earned

This is one of his last tv interviews folks, its from 05, but some of you may have not seen it

Michael Jordan is one of the most recognized names in the world, and among the most dominant and gifted athletes ever to play professional sports.

But how does a man who has been called the most competitive person alive still compete when there are no more games to play, no more championships to win? It’s a question Jordan tries to answer in his new book, Driven from Within, which came out last October.

That quote right there sums the whole thing up for me regarding athletes today.

Well, it's true for society as a whole.

Kids today assume they are supposed to have everything they want (including that top paying position right out of college) when they haven't worked for it.

The only reason why kids think they should have it is because parents gave them what they wanted when said kids were growing up.

But, I'm not going to get any deeper on this because we're talking basketball and not society (though I think a lot of it can relate).
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

For the most part, I agree with MJ.

The reason why guaranteed contracts are being thrown like garbage nowadays is because of "potential" that has very little chances of panning out with the kid overwhelmed by money and bling blings. Too much nightlife and very less time realizing thier potential.

Funny MJ says that when I see his son's AAU team playing in Florida, wearing authentic, double-mesh jerseys w. sewn on numbers (nicer than most DI college jerseys), full warmup suits (again, nicer than most college program's) and tons of gear. Of course Jordan sneakers too, bags, hats, etc.

Each kid on the team walked into the gym w. close to $400 worth of apparel covering their body. I'm sure they earned that, esp the kids on the team who won't even play DIII.

Yup, with MJ contributing to the problem since he paid for all of it.

I dont think he was talking about AAU teams and im sure you know that.

And after his long career, Jordan can’t keep silent about the state of basketball today. He says that too many young players are overpaid and overindulged, affecting their work ethic and hurting the game he loves so much.

"The kids today, they are being given things that they haven’t earned," Jordan says. "I don’t want to seem like an old-school, traditional, bitter type of guy. You ask me and I’m telling you. I think the game is being cheated because of the success that’s being given prior to them earning it. Simple as that.”
Look at guys demanding huge contracts like Chris Wilcox. Olowakandi for another example wanting max deals for absolutely nothing, and those are the lower tier guys.

                            Oh, I definitely understand that.

But I think that attitude starts in these kids at a young age. I think a good example is the Maurice Clarett situation. The kid was spoiled and had everything handed to him his whole life w. no consequences.

Obviously NBA players aren't going out committing felonies like Clarett, but spoiled, pampered athletes who have everything handed to them on a silver platter are being done a huge disservice.

Who's to blame? Not someone donating to an AAU team.

It goes much further than that
