Re: Dispelling myths: Kevin Garnett

i thought Garnett got that big contract the year before the lockout and the contract changes. otherwise he wouldn't be making so much a year. but anyway, he got what he got money-wise. the greedy one was Stephon Marbury. if he didn't whine like he did so he could be closer to NYC, and stayed in Minnesota, they would have been in out of the 1st round by now. that still urks me how he just wanted to go.

as for Garnett, he is a great player and he does play with heart. i'm tired of seeing people just say he's soft or he doesn't play good in the playoffs, totally untrue. he was going back and forth with Tim Duncan...toe to toe. he needs better players around him. ok not just better players...but players who will step up and take clutch shots. or come up big in games. Wally World is a good player but i don't see him taking heat. i don't see him stepping up and getting 30 points. Terrell Brandon used to be the best PG in the league but he's been done for like 4 years now. Joe Smith never panned out, he had that one good year with Golden State never did anything with the Sixers or Minnesota. i don't know what else KG can do. he can shoot, score, rebound, block, pass, dribble and he's a leader.

part of it is the FO fault, they havent had a first round pick in 2 or 3 years b/c of that joe smith incident and he isn't even playing up to his potential...

He did get his contract before the salary cap and i am pretty sure that if he signed that extension its not for more or even the same amount.

Oh it was a big contract, cause I remember seeing how much money was involved for the extension on espn.com when they first came out with the news on it, I just wish I remember the digits.

The problem is one the dummies in the front office got caught trying sign Joe "Freaky Smith" to a contract under the table so they lose five 1st rd picks... Terrell Brandon has a big contract hasn't played in two years..

Maybe he could win a championship if he was willing to take a paycut. If he cuts his salary from 18m to 12m, the Timberwolves can get some better talent, so he can get out the first round. If Shaq got paid liked the best player in the league he wouldn't be able to win those championships because they wouldn't be able to keep Kobe or have a good supporting cast.

Shaq makes 23+ million this year so he is far above KG. With that said the T'wolves could have had a much better team if they weren't so stupid to sign Joe "Never Has Been" Smith to a under the table contract which cost them 3 first round picks. KG is one of the best player's in the nba no doubt about it.

If what you say about Shaq's contract is true then that's probally why the Lakers are on they're way to the lottery. And that's probally why they have a weak supporting cast.

                      Re: Dispelling myths: Kevin Garnett

KG's constract was, literally, the reason that there was a lockout so contract structures could be re-tooled. He was the last big contract before all the maximums were put on contracts for players with certain experience.

The bigger reason there's a lack of supporting cast on the Wolves is because of the lack of a smart front office. Terrell Brandon is making a ton of money, and has played maybe 40 games in 3 years. He's making so much money they wouldn't even be able to trade him for Dean Garrett because no one wants to take on his contract.

Then they went and signed Joe Smith illegally, costing the Wolves any chance of building a team around Garnett during his prime.

To add on to that, they're drafting has been horrid. Their one good draft pick besides Garnett, Ray Allen, they traded away the day we drafted him. Can you imagine Ray Allen, arguably the third or fourth best 2 guard in the league, on the same team as Garnett? Throw in a decent big man (Nesterovic) and a above average PG (Hudson) and bam, they'd be contenders. But alas...

People look at the Wolves and say they can't get out of the first round because of Garnett. When I look at the Wolves, I think the only reason they even make it to the first round is because of Garnett. KG is one of the very, very few players in the league that could be put on ANY team, and he'd make that team a playoff team. They may not go far, but it's almost guaranteed they'd be in the playoffs.

I seriously hope the Wolves trade Garnett to someone that has a chance at contending in the near future. Get a few draft picks or something, and get a new front office to make use of those draft picks. I just wish KG would be on a team that won a lot, because there would be no doubt that he would be considered one of the best in the league. As it is, he struggles to crack some people's top 10 lists. Truly sad.

Will, I agree with you on that some of that but it's not like their draft pick was a bad one. Stephon Marbury is a better player than Ray Allen, and would do more for their team. Kevin McHale could not have predicted that he would hate Minnesota, and want to leave. Plus, it's not like Kevin Garnett is getting old. He's only 26, he hasn't even reached his prime yet.

You're one of the few I think who would consider Stephon Marbury better than Ray Allen.

True, KG is only 26 right now. He'll be 27 by the time we actually start getting first round draft picks. Noting recent trends, it'll probably be about 3 years before any first round pick starts making a meaningful impact. That means, at the earliest, KG will start having a team around him when he's 30, and to me, that's a shame.

I think Stephon Marbury gets way too much crap. I'm a Nets fan so I saw him play for a little bit. They are two seperate positions but you can still kind of compare them. In my mind, Allen is a better shooter, but Marbury can drive better, better passer, better rebounder and plays better defense.
