Looking dead at the ref, I would think, is considered a staredown. I'm sure there are non-verbal communication rules of showing up the ref.

This is the only problem I have with them enforcing this. The NBA, out of all the professional leagues, completely favors the superstar and the home team in almost all situations. There is no reason to think this will be any different.

So, you can't look at a ref the wrong way? Give me a break. It was BS when 'Sheed got that tech back in the playoffs a few years ago for looking at the ref the wrong way, and it's BS now. I can understand getting a tech for touching, threatening, yelling, or cursing at the ref, but some of this **** is ridiculous.

This would be the worst explanation for the NBA to give a season ticket holder for their star player being ejected in the 2nd qtr

wow @ all of you acting like this good

Through 17 games this season there have been 29 technicals and 4 ejections, this compared to 6 technicals and 1 ejection a year ago. Refs having too much power has been a problem in the past, with certain ones always trying to take over the game. All this rule does is make things worse. It's not complaining when the ref is flat out wrong and everyone can see it. Some of your comments are just ridiculous...

Also, the whole notion of "showing up the ref" is ridiculous as it all goes back to the individual ref. The refs (you know the ones) who take themselves way too seriously will be constantly throwing guys out because of a look or some other bs like that. Since when did someone interpreting a look = grounds for an ejection?

I'm for the rule, it's all good.

Watch the NFL tools. They don't argue with the officials there and it's not a problem. Let the play speak for itself instead of the whiners.

Judging from all the boos everytime a player instinctively throws up their hands then instantly apologizes prior to getting a technical, I'd say most fans don't see them as 'whiners'.

Well, I dunno about you, but I've seen many a WR and DB arguing for pass interference calls each week, QBs pleading their case on intentional grounding, defenders having something to say about penalties on QB hits, and players objecting to questionable calls in general. It happens in every league.

Dammit I hope that the next CBA comes fast. Now players and owners can work it out like how the NHL and the NHLPA worked it out to create a vastly better game in the NHL. It's getting worse in the NBA, especially with all the techs like Elson screaming after a dunk.

Seriously, they are waaaaaay too sensitive. Whoever is watching the suns game, Amare got a tech for jumping up and said "OH!!" for just 1 second after a reach in foul. He didn't look at the ref, didn't talk to him whatsoever and just got T'ed up. WTF is that

You do know that the NHL had to basically blow everything up to get the changes that have helped the game? I don't think the NBA owners have the balls to axe a whole season to fix the financial and ESPECIALLY the on court product.

Anyways, I hesitate to bring this up because when the "R" word is spoken around here people lose all objectivity but Tony Kornheiser raised an interesting point on PTI by saying that if the refs continue to enforce this rule throughout the season then some stars are going to play the race card and there's going to be a huge controversy over it.

I hope that he's wrong but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

I wish people would stop coming in here comparing the rules of the NBA to the NFL. The NFL has nothing to do with this.

This tech rule is the result of a commissioner gone wild. Unchecked power and the players association needs to do something because they're surely losing any voice they have.

I do know the NHL had to flush everything they had in the past down the toilet to recreate the league. This is exactly what the NBA needs to do. The officials and Stern aren't going to let up and this problem is only going to become worse. I just can not see the NBA game being fixed like the game was back in the 80s unless if the owners have the balls to just axe an entire season to fix the league.

Short term pain, long term gain.

Ok, Marion just got one for making a small hand motion to disregard a call. Like something you would do when after saying, "whatever." Its so rediculous, there not even looking at the refs, not saying a word and one small hand gesture gets you a tech.

I hope you guys who agree with this really see how bad it is. Its making small hand gestures can get you kicked out of a game.
