YankeePride_YP: How old are you? You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Kareem's career spans 20 years and you can say was that he only played against one other great center!? Let me throw some other names at you: Wes Unseld, Dave Cowens, Moses Malone, Robert parish, Willis Reed, Bill Walton, Artis Gilmore, Nate Thurmond. I don't know if you know this, but back in the day they didn't have 29 NBA teams. So those players played one another at least 7-8 times per year. Today you may face a player of the same caliber, in your own conference 4 times and then face scrubs for the rest of the way. IT'S ALOT EASIER BEING A CENTER TODAY THAN IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO. get the facts!

I agree with all the ppl saying Shaqs got it easy. And Jsuperstar made great points. The league was a lot touhger back then then it is now. More physical games, no one had crossovers, everybody usally scored on post moves or jumpshots off passing. And all of those centers u mentioned played tough games. Way, way more tougher than Shaq has it. Before the 3 point line the majority of scoring came from the inside so there was'nt alot of passing lanes, you could'nt hang outside and throw your big man a pass inside rigt under the hoop like the majority of Shaqs passes get to him. He just bodies his way inside, wait for the ball and take it up for an easy two. Not one center in the league can stop that with the exception of a few, but the centers mentioned above would put Shaq on his ***. plain and simple.

I agree that the legends of the game get too much credit. But it's like that in every sport, the oldtimers just have trouble letting go of the past.

              yep, you are right.

he definitely did play against other dominating centers.

to be quite honest, I don't think I knew what I was talkin about either. Why did I say he only played Chamberlain? I don't know. I guess I was tryin to say that Chamberlain was probably as dominant as Kareem. The other centers, while great and all, are probably never mentioned in the same breath as the two centers. But you are correct when you say that Kareem did play other competitive centers.

My fault for that. I'm actually very familiar with those players and I guess maybe I got carried away with this legends held to a high standard thing.

I still feel that the league today is far more competitive then it was years ago. I already stated my reasons for why I believe field goal percentage has gone down. And I will agree that part of the reason is that there aren't as many pure shooters in the league as there were in the 80's or before.

But in my opinion, that doesn't make the 80's any better than the 90's. I'm talkin about pure athletic ability and talent. And I just feel that today we have better athletes, capable of doing so much more than in the 80's. Are they doin that so much more? No. And that's why it's probably so easy to say that the 80's were better. If the players of today concentrated on reaching their potential then I really believe that the league of today would surpass the league's of yesterday. But that's my opinion, obviously. And like I said, I can see the reasons behind your opinion.

The only problem I have with your opinion is that you seem to be like most people that follow the NBA. Giving way too much credit to the legends of the league. Hey, they were great players, but we hold them high like gods. When all they really were are building blocks to making the league as popular as it is today. Important? Ofcourse. But lets be fair and not compare the guys of today to those of before.

We are seeing two different games of basketball. The game has evolved. I doubt the players of the 80's could play in this system of basketball. While I doubt the players of today could play in the 80's system.
