J.O'Neal:we should go our separate ways at the end of the season,"

DALLAS -- The Indiana Pacers' inconsistency has started to take its toll on their franchise player.

Forward Jermaine O'Neal spent about 20 minutes inside an empty locker room at the American Airlines Center late Thursday night venting about their 17-16 record.

"We're a very average team right now," O'Neal said. "We're going to be average until we decide as players that we want to win and do the right things we're supposed to do to win. If we don't do it, we're going to mingle around .500, get in the playoffs and then be out."

O'Neal's frustrations boiled over after the Pacers squandered an opportunity to end the Dallas Mavericks' 11-game winning streak Thursday.

The constant inconsistency has O'Neal thinking about his future with the Pacers.

"If I can't take this team to another level, I truthfully believe we should go our separate ways at the end of the season," said O'Neal, who added his first choice is to remain with the Pacers. "I'm saying in general, the bottom line is you play to win. If we don't have a system set to win a championship, if we don't have the crew to win a championship, then what are we doing?

"I'm getting to the point, I'm in my 11th year, I don't want to play 82 games and then exit to watch somebody else pop champagne. . . . I'm tired of that. I want to compete for a championship. If we can't do it, that's a whole (different) story."

When asked if he has taken his displeasure to CEO Donnie Walsh and team president Larry Bird, O'Neal said, "It's in the best interest of my team and the city not to comment about that."

"I think he's played really well and if the time comes for (talking about O'Neal's future), then that will be the time. We'll see," Walsh said.

"We've proven we can go out and beat the best teams in the East. We've also gone out and proven we can lose to the worst teams in the East," O'Neal said. "What's the solution? I don't know what the solution is. It's frustrating."

The Pacers' rotation has been just as inconsistent as their play on the court. Players are uncertain of their roles on the team. Talk about players having their own personal agenda has started to circulate around the locker room.

I remember turning to a friend during that game v Detroit and saying "these guys will win the championship this season..."

Then came the fight, Artest going postal...

They'd gone into Detroit and man handled the Pistons. People forget that. Jermaine and Ron were playing like top 10 players...that was their 'time'.

In a lot of ways, Ron Artest ruined Jermaine O'Neals prime.

Honestly, I agree with you. They could have easily competed for the championship that year.

Don't forget they ruined Reggei's last shot at a title as well.

Maybe Chicago can give up Duhon and Nocioni for JO.

Anything else, Indy can keep him.

JO is elite level and entering his prime. They'd prolly want Deng in any deal. Deng, Duhon, and Table. Or Tai-Bo. Whatever.

Yeah, still makes me angry to think about that. Miller deserved a lot better.

I still find it hard to believe the Pacers all forgave Artest...and then he asked for a trade 10 games back.

                Dude is just not 'there'.

Its sad because Oneal and Jeff Foster are basically the only Pacers who have been playing like they care this year.......JO has been consistent all year with his scoring, rebounding, passing and defense.....His defense has been off the charts this year, this guy is one of the best clutch defenders I've ever seen....He's constantly making a huge block near the end of the game.....Anyway, he really does deserve better this year and as a Pacer fan, I blame Carlisle more than anyone else.....How many coaches would let Tinsley jack up brick after brick without yanking his *** or let Jackson bitch to the refs the entire game? There's no discipline on the team.....

Whats worse is that the Pacers have one of the most talented rosters in the league but I'm not sure what the problem is.....The way Foster and Oneal are playing, I'm sure there are teams that would kill to have that frontcourt......They have Harrington, Granger, Daniels, and they have Josh Powell and Rawle Marshall who for some reason get absolutely no playing time......I would've pulled Jackson a long time ago and gave Marshall some PT and I would pull Tinsley when he starts messing up......If they don't think Sarunas can do it, and Armstrong can only play 20 minutes a game, then let Daniels play PG.........Hell, I don't care....

I think it's the coach. No offense but they need a new coach, or they need to toss the dead weight holding the team down. They should have cut all their players that weren't a benefit to the team. Ron did ruin that team but Larry Bird ain't help it either. They need to re-evaluate where they're going and toss all those players they don't need right now. Jackson should definitely be first to go whether he's a good boy from now on or not. When they got Harrington, I thought they sealed a great deal of their season right there. Guess his addition didn't do anything for them. That's kind of messed up. Who did they pick in the draft? Maybe they should look to the draft to pick up someone??

On a side note, Indiana can keep Jermaine. He's a nice player but I'd rather keep my pieces and try the draft. Rather get someone who can grow with the team. Duhon is a pretty important piece in our puzzling team. I'm sure Paxson sees that and doesn't trade him. But then again, we don't know. If they pick up J.O., then how much playing time will Tyrus get? P.J. will start complaining again. Don't now if it will help to get him.

That's mostly frustration coming from Jermaine O'Neal after that tough loss the Pacers had at Dallas. But he does have a point. A lot of his teammates are so inconsistent that it's difficult to get a read on how good this Pacers team is. Take Jamaal Tinsley, for one. I swear he plays like an all-star against the Pistons every time, then turn around and play very average against everyone else. Tinsley needs to bring it every night. Or at least treat every PG like he's wearing a Pistons jersey, heh.

At any rate, I think the Pacers also need a true SG who's good enough to start. Stephen Jackson is a decent player, but he doesn't pass as one. To me, he's suited to come off the bench and be primarily a SF who can also play spot minutes as a 2-guard.

I'm tired of players signing these big *** contracts with teams and then not following through with their commitments. Their teams weren't worth a damn when they signed on and then they act like they should be surprised when their teams aren't worth **** after they sign. You make 20+ mil a year for the remainder of the contract, you shouldn't be crying

I guess we're thinking differently because we average joes don't earn anything near that.

However, I also believe guys like J O'Neal has gotten used to earning that much and takes it for granted. That's why I believe it's the main reason why those million dollar babies in the NBA still cry like babies when things don't go right for them.

The problem is that these players know they have their respective teams by the balls, because one player can make such a huge difference. When a star player buys in and plays outstanding, the team has no choice but to sign him because the backlash by fans would be too much. However if the same player then becomes disinterested because of a little losing and demands a trade, the team has no choice either, because one player can totally turn the locker room cancerous.

I agree 1000% with this. Maybe O'neal doesnt have help because there isnt any more cap room after they signed him to a 100 mil contract. I cant stand these players complaining about being on a losing team. O'neal is way overpayed and needs to keep his mouth shut, he is not at the same level of Duncan, Garnett, or Yao. Why cant every NBA player be like Shane Battier??
