The argument to end all arguments - who is the best player of all time?

I'm gonna list a few names, you can add your own if you wish. I will try to list just the players that actually have a chance at being named, aka Kobe will not be listed.

In no particular order:

Michael Jordan - 6 championships, 10 scoring titles, 3 MVP's (I think), 6 Finals MVP's, like 15-time all-star, and an uncanny ability to hit the big shot. What else can be said?

Magic Johnson - The all-around player, could play every position, and not just well, but damn near great. Had a passing eye like no other, could take over a game in any way possible.

Larry Bird - arguably the best pure shooter of all, while he can be considered, I don't quite think he is the best.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - didn't the Lakers win like 33 consecutive games under his "reign"?

Bill Russell - 8 consecutive titles. 'Nuff said.

Wilt Chamberlain - 100 points in a game, 50 ppg, 25 rpg, the guy was a monster. People argue that his height had a lot to do with his success, but he still belongs in this discussion undeniably.

Oscar Robertson - Tell me the next time someone will AVERAGE a triple-double for a season AND AVERAGE 30 ppg in that same season?

imo,

1. Magic Johnson
2. Michael Jordan
3. Kareem
4. Shaq
5. Wilt
6. Larry legend

Bill Russell did win 8 consecutive championship, but that was in an era when there were a total of 8 teams in the league. He was one of the best ever, but he played in an era when the league was pretty "watered down" (similar to Jim Brown in the NFL)

Tim Duncan's name will be put into this discussion by the time he retires, I think he gets his 4th Championship and Final's MVP this season. He's still not THAT old.

I think the 33 straight wins was with Wilt.

Magic is the best player EVER imo.

Just the perfect player. A guy born to play. A 6'9 guy who could run the game from the point...dominate in the paint...best passer ever...even won a finals game playing C...!

I mean, the guy IS basketball.

Jordan is the greatest WINNER ever. By that, I mean the most competitive / ultra determined. Just insanely competitive.

But I'd put Magic ahead for sheer all round skill.

Bill Russell. The best team player in American sports. I know winning doesn't matter as much as flashy videos and dunks. I wonder how many players now could play during the 60's when you couldn't eat where you wanted and live in certain neighborhoods. It was much harder to play then travel and racism. Bill did it and did it with class.

11 posts and no Big O?

Big O...did it all and was a lockdown defender. Dominated in college, set 14 NCAA records...dominated in the pros with the triple doubes. Not just putting up 17-18 points either...dude was doing 30+ ppg season while killing the baords and assists...Won a Olympic gold medal...Invented the perimiter bigman game (back when 6'5" was a bigman) and was the leagues first big guard....Cincinatti had never had a black player, so O played in the Midwest under a ton of pressure....AND he was the president of the players union when they sued the league and helped grow free agency into what it is today.

The only knock on the O is that he carried mediocre teams for his entire career in an era of the Lakers/Celtics dominance. You can't win an MVP on a sucky squad, point blank. Put him on any great team of the 60's and he probably would have had 8 or 9 titles and MVP's awards.

Mike was the greatest "winner" of all-time, and he made basketball the global marketing powerhouse it is today...and Magic was "Big O Lite" minus the defense...but, IMO, Oscar was the Best Player EH-VAH.

Michael Jordan, don't feel like getting into a debate about it since its run its course anyway......I think a lot of times people just like to say somebody else just to be different.......But I don't see it.....
