Toronto Star -
All signs point to Raptor coach Sam Mitchell being named the league's coach of the year for 2006-07 and being honored before Game 2 of Toronto's Eastern Conference playoff series against the New Jersey Nets , the Toronto Star writes.
The league announced last night it would announce the coach of the year winner tomorrow and the league likes to allow the various winners their moment in the sun in front of a home crowd.
In a straw poll of writers and broadcasters who vote on the award, Mitchell had a slight edge on Utah's Jerry Sloan and Avery Johnson of the Dallas Mavericks .
In the past, the league has made sure the winner of any significant post-season award has been honored before his team plays.
Neither the Jazz nor the Mavericks play tomorrow night. [READ]

I am from Toronto and this news bothers me. I personally feel he is the coach of the year by default.
It seems that all the things that Mitchell has done this year is either over valued or not really relevant. All in all it seems that the NBA/media is trying to find a way to give the award to Mitchell instead of giving another one to either Avery or Sloan.
The fact that he had to take a bunch of new players and made them into a solid team in the East --- First off, a solid team in the east could easily finish 7th-9th in the West. Secondly, what NBA team doesn't have to deal with 4 or 5 new players every year.
He won the Atlantic Division-- Well Avery Johnson won the whole friggin' West. Just cause the Mavs winning is nothing new should not DQ Avery Johnson
His team plays for him -- Well thats all well and true, but Jerry Sloans players and Avery Johnsons players play for them too.
All in all it seems that the NBA/media is trying to find a way to give the award to Mitchell instead of giving another one to either Avery or Sloan.
