Well, Dirk is officially the MVP

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2866994

Dirk has caught a ton of heat for his performance in the playoffs. I'm certainly guilty of it. However, as the dust settles here in Dallas and we struggle to comprehend wtf happened, it's easily apparent that Dirk wasn't the sole reason we lost to Golden St. There is enough blame to go around. Changes will be made and it'll be interesting to see what those are. I wouldn't expect anything drastic but there will be a few shakeups, namely in the backcourt and something down low that doesn't involve Dirk. Anyways, that's neither here nor there, congrats to Dirk. He earned it.

Said Nowitzki, reached by phone Thursday night: "Nobody's told me anything. You [media] guys have been talking about it for a while, so let's see what happens.

"[But] it's hard to even think about that stuff right now. Everything [from the Golden State series] is still pretty fresh. It's been some tough days since we lost.

"I thought this was such an incredible year. We won 67 games and then to lose in the first round, it just feels so empty right now."
Asked to imagine what an MVP ceremony would be like after such a disappointment, Nowitzki said: "If I do get it, it's an incredible honor. I'm sure 20 years from now or whatever, to see that in the [record] books, it's an amazing achievement. But right now, it's hard. Obviously, you can't feel good about the way our season ended."

I'll be one of the 1st to say good for him, he deserved it but I'm sure he'd much rather still be in the playoffs.

I don't think the MVP award is ever handed out the right way. They seem to just give it to the best player on the best team every year. If Dirk was so valuable, it would have made hardly a difference that a lot of others didn't step up in the series against the Warriors (btw, I think Jason Terry played the best basketball for the Mavs in their short post-season.

Basketball is probably the only team sport where a single player can win a series of ballgames for you (Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, LeBron in these playoffs, Shaquille O'Neal in LA)

IMO, Dirk is not the most valuable player in the league. I would probably choose LeBron James or Steve Nash as my MVP. If not one of them, then Gilbert Arenas had he finished the season healthy.

Actually, I would go with Josh Howard.

i concur. Golden State showed that dirk isn't even the best player on the mavericks team, let alone the entire league.

What games were you watching. I happen to think he was one of the worst. JET has found himself in no man's land. He's a 2-guard, plain and simple and what the Mavs lack is a post player and a point guard to run the offense. Devin Harris seems to be figuring it out but can't keep both any longer.

Too bad for Harris that he can't seem to stay healthy.`

Diop played the best for that team.

good to see Dirk win it. well deserved

Dirk has now won both the MVP of the World Championships, and NBA MVP. I wonder how many players have done that before? He is also the first European to win the award.

If Dirk has a great finals run next season...this will be partly forgotten. It's not like he hasn't performed before. He beat SA in SA in a game 7. That's clutch.

Dallas are going nowhere with that backcourt though. D-Wade last season and now Barron Davis just absolutely had their way with the Mavs guards. They need a big guy in the backcourt who can shoot under pressure and actually guard someone.
