Gary Payton, the most underrated player in NBA.

I am really sick and tired of the lack of respect Gary Payton receives from the NBA and the "mainstream" fans. Sure, us die hard ball fans know GP is one of the best point guards in the nba, but no body else seems to know. That is why GP never evn gets to start in All star game, even though he has been the NBA's best point guard for the past... oh 8 FREAKING YEARS.

Gary Payton has finally slowed down because of age this year, but even this year he is averging 20 points and almost 9 assist a game. he gets NO respect. Whenever I hear MVP talk, all i hear is webber, garnett, duncan, never ever GP.

kobe bryant averged 25, 5 and 5 last year and i heard about it non stop. i heard about how kobe and tmac were the only two guys in the NBA last year with 25, 5 and 5 stats, blah blah blah. three years ago Gary Payton averged 24 points, 9 assist and 6 rebounds a game!!!!!!!!(six boards for a guy thats 6'4 and 180) guess what? that year GP again got no love, he didnt start he all star game, he didnt get any consideration for MVP. There was no talk about his "24, 9 and 6" statline. Why does kobe get so much hype for 25,5 and 5, but GP gets no attention for 24,9 and 6????

Kidd is better then Gary Payton now, I admit that, thats because of old age. But for the past 5, 6 years Kidd has been called the best PG in the NBA when GP was way better then him. GP and Kidd would averge around same assist but GP would score like 8 points more a game and shoot better percentage. Gary Payton also had bad teammates.... rashard lewis , vin baker, brent barry is NOT better then Kidd's Suns teammates.

even now Gary Payton's teammates are mediocre at best. You can't blame sonic's bad record on him, he is doing everything.

It is truly sad because Gary Payton will most likely retire with no rings and he will be forgotten, while clowns like vince carter, kobe and iverson will get all this ridiculous ammounts of love.

Payton's career kind of reminds me of mitch richmmonds. An excellent player on a team that has been going nowhere for years. The made that one finals but Jordan wasnt about to let them win. His problem is the same as richmmonds was, Mitch needed to get the hell out of sacramento and now GP needs to get the hell outta seattle. It's just not going to work for him there.

Bad intentions- Horrible comparison there. The sonics were regarded as the best or second best team for about 4-6 years. Richmond never even got on a decent team.

Gary Payton is a great player, but he's not underrated. He's underhyped. Big difference.

                            underrated, underhyped. i dunno

all i know is for the past 4 years payton should have been an MVP candidate instead of clowns like iverson, jason kidd, chris webber, kobe, etc, etc.

Kidd did NOT become a worthy MVP candidate until LAST YEAR when he led Nets to #1 seed, all the years before it was just stupid talk. Webber??? That guy is like the 4th most clutch player on his own team. Garnett cant lead his team to nothign. Now i know Garnett is doing everything for his team and his stats are amazing, but he needs to shoot more and dominate more when the game is on the line in the PLAYOFFS. I dont buy into the story that he cant get pass first round becusae of bad teammates. Garnett has more talented teammates then Gary payton, Allen Iverson, Tracy Mcgrady, Vince Carter, etc, etc.

GP averged 24,9 and 6 and there was NO LOVE. Kobe averged 25, 5 and 5 last year and every frekaing magazine and every newspaper in the world mentions it. wtf???

I consider GP one of the top 5, 6 point guards in NBA history... does anyone agree? I would like to know y'all's opinion!
