Coach of the Year Discussion 08

It's really, really interesting this year. Only one guy can win it, but I think it's harder this year than any year in recent memory. There are a couple of coaches in the league this year that, if they don't win it, the voters will be saying: "There is nothing you could have done to won this award."

Doc Rivers: If you keep the C's playing at the pace they've been playing at, and you win more than 65 games and you don't win the COY award, then "There is nothing you could have done to won this award." Why? Because no team should be expected to win 70 games, especially if they lack the depth that your C's do. And no one expected you to play this kind of D.

Phil Jackson: If you keep the Lakers at their pace, and you wind up winning over 55 games, then "There is nothing you could have done to won this award." Why? No one wins that many games with only 1 all star. True, you should give your award to Kareem for the development of Andrew Bynum, but you have your team playing team ball and shooting the lights out. Your rotations not only get you win,s but allow your younger players to keep learning.

Nate Mcmillen: You're easy. If Portland makes the playoffs, they will have beat out Utah or Houston to get there. Without any All Stars, a young team and losing your number 1 pick for the season, you did what literally no one expected you to do. Portland should not be in the playoffs in the West, and if they make it, it was all great coaching. If you don't win it, "There is nothing you could have done to won this award."

Other guys are doing decent work, like Flip Saunders and Byron Scott, but I don't know how you take it away from Phil, Nate or Doc.

            Nate McMillen

I can't vote for Rivers because it's almost a fait accompli having those 3 superstars on the starting roster. McMillen has taken a team that was figured to finish poorly this year due to their youth yet he's got them playing way above their head and not only that but they've shown a lot of poise.

I vote for Nate. Glenn Rivers is only up there because of the big Three. I still don't see him as that great of a coach.

Isiah for getting a 24 point win against the Pistons.

It is a close race this year. Phil is doing an outstanding job in LA. McMillian is getting his young players to gel. But I'm giving it to Doc Rivers. Eventhough I'm going to get the typical response of, "Doc Sucks" from the Doc Rivers haters club.

Glenn does suck. Look at his line of work before he got the 3 superstars. McMillan deserves it.

He got Coach of the Year in 2000. Went .500 with a team that was at that time not much better talent-wise than the Bulls. And if you remember at that time the Bulls was the worst team in basketball.

He had a bad team. Those same players in Minnesota are doing TERRIBLY. It's absurd that you wouldn't give the man credit for the D he's getting out of his 9 man rotation. He has 2 very very good players, one great players and then a bunch of guys who wouldn't start on any other good team in the league.
