    Charlotte

I'm a little confused by the Charlotte situation. Why would the NBA move the Hornets away from Charlotte, and then give the city a team back within a couple of years?

    Re: Charlotte

The fans ended up hating George Shinn for a whole mess of reasons causing attendance to drop

As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

That's one of the reasons I was wondering, because yesterday watching the Raptors play there, the attendance didn't look too hot, which made me wonder why they gave them a team back...

Also, thanks a lot to Taur3asi3 for the link, that explained a lot of things

But u have to remember that the Bobcats aren't going to the playoffs, and those games now don't really mean anything. I'm sure that if the Bobcats were winning some more games and were at least .500 there would have been many sell-outs games. I remember an interview with Michael Jordan prior to this season (or last season?) when he spoke about the need to make a stronger connection with the fans and make the fans identify with the team, or something like that. If some1 can tell us about the attendance earlier this season, that could shed some light on the issue imo.

I remember going to Hornets games in the mid 90's, and they had some sort of all-time sellout record for consecutive games. People love basketball in North Carolina, and if the Bobcats put together a solid team, I could see some dedication from the fans.

O, alright. See, I'm used to Toronto more I guess, people would show up to Raptors games even when we were sucking, but ye that makes sense

Does basketball attract many people in Toronto? I think hockey and baseball are stronger there. And Canada doesn't really have basketball tradition imo (though the Raptors have been playing there since 1995), beside the fact the Dr. Naismith was Canadian... One time I asked a Canadian on this forum about the popularity of basketball and if they have basketball courts over there, and he was offended because I had asked all those questions. I hope u don't get offended by this questions, dude.

                    Re: Charlotte

Are you kidding? The ACC would be filled and sold out quite often even during our 33-49 years. Canadians in general are way more passionate about hockey (personally I hate it) but there is more than enough of the population in Toronto specifically that loves basketball. See, the thing about Toronto is it's ridiculously multicultural, so we have people of all races, so it's not strictly hockey town like a town a little up north would be. A little north in Ontario then you'd definitely be right, there's nothing but hockey up there...

The Shinn situation soured the state on the NBA. & frankly, Bob Johnson has not promoted the Bobcats statewide like the Hornets were. The news "Down East" used to have the highlights from every Hornets game. They rarely say anything about them now. I know in my neck of the state, I've only seen the Bobcats twice since they first got on court.

As a nc resident I personally hate the Bobcats organization, not because of anything on the court. We had a strong bandwagon fanbase which is understandable it was the first professional sports team in the carolinas, but it just isn't strong enough to support a team anymore. Know when to hold them, know when to fold them.

And they have an exclusive television deal with time warner cable, which means there games dont air on NBA League Pass, so thats one less possible game for me to watch everynight.

Top 10 in attendence, 30 sellouts this year.

And it's not like Miami that apparently sells out every game, yet there's only 12,000 people a game. The Raptors legitimately have close to 19,450 per game in their 19,800 seat stadium.

Consider last season we started 2-8. And look at the season's below that. After our last playoff appearance in 02-03, we were still drawing big crowds.

This season we're at 98% capaticy per game.

Nice. And BTW I remember when Anthony Parker played here every1 liked him a lot! I once saw him using ATM in Tel Aviv (I waited for using it too). Many people here consider him as the best foreign player ever to play here basketball.

                              Re: Charlotte

In my opinion, the reason the Bobcats don't draw well in Charlotte is a combination of things.

For one, the team stinks. That didn't matter back when the Hornets were selling out every game but this isn't 1989 anymore. There's a lot more to do in Charlotte and a bad basketball team just isn't going to draw the interest it did 15 years ago.

Secondly, you used to be able to get a good lower level seat to a Hornets game for $50. Now, $50 barely gets you in the door at Bobcats Arena. If you want lower level, you're not going to pay anything less $55.00, and that's for the crappy lower level seats.

The final season the Hornets were in Charlotte, an $80 ticket could get you as close as a $150 ticket does for a Bobcats game.

And finally, during the Hornets' peak, the Panthers weren't even a factor. They didn't start playing until 1995, 7 years after the Hornets debuted. Charlotte was a Hornets' town first (well actually ACC hoops first, Hornets second, but you get my point). Fast forward to 4 years ago when the Bobcats came to town, the Panthers were coming off of a trip to the Super Bowl and were firmly entrenched as the city's favorite pro sports team.

For people who would go to both, because of ticket prices they were forced to pick one or the other. Most have stuck with the Panthers.
