I'd Like to See the League Implement this [Playoffs Idea]

Yeah yeah yeah there's been rumblings about the imbalance in conferences.. with more rumblings about how it's all "cyclical" [which I agree with for now]. So to offset, I have always loved my idea for playoff seedings, which I brought up last year but nobody really agreed or disagreed.

Idea: The top seed of each conference gets awarded with choosing their opponent, any of the other 7 conference clubs. It'd add some great intrigue, drama, etc. to the league. As it stands, I don't want the Lakers, currently a 2nd/3rd seed playing the Mavs, the 7th seed, nor the Suns, the 6th seed. I'd rather have them play the Rockets, a 5th seed. Hornets would pick first, Lakers/Spurs second and third, and the Jazz fourth. Same sequence for the East.

I feel this is way less extreme than 1-16 seeds, and is very much feasible. There'd definitely be some indirect disrespecting going on, with teams picking other teams basically saying "we WANT yall". And you definitely wouldn't have any of that nonsense of losing on purpose to enhance your seeding for matchup purposes.

That's interesting, but, what does that do for other seedings? What if the team the #1 team chooses to play is the #3 team?

That screws up the whole order of progression of the playoffs in terms of the 1-8 playing 4-5, 2-7 playing 3-6...

This kind of screws other teams who may have played well all season and got a good seed only to find themselves playing the best team in the league in the first round.


I wonder if the league did a sort of selection committee type of deal, and just ranked the teams the way they do in college basketball, in a mix of overall record and a team's talent at the end of the season (through media, coaches and computer polls).


Or, they could just keep it the way it is. I don't see a whole lot of flaws in this system.

Actually to be honest I really liked the 1-16 idea, but then I guess it makes the conference thing kind of useless as well as some potential travelling in series, but it would result in better basketball in my opinion. I think that while it's a good idea, it's too radical of a change to happen if you know what I mean, wouldn't happen because of inertia...

Yeah that's a problem actually. Like if the Hornets chose the Spurs to play first, that could be dicey.

A 1-16 change isn't in the cards, but I for one would love to see it. The league would never make an extreme change like that though.

I think it should be more like baseball.

Each division winner gets in then the rest fight it out for 2 wild cards in each conference.

Makes the regular season and inter division rivalries much more exciting.

Too many teams get in now, even for the west.

There is no need to change anything. There has been more buzz about the NBA playoffs because of the way it is now. The 1st round almost never mattered until now.

I have an idea, how about move the Grizzlies to the Eastern Conference.. They aren't in Canada Mr. Stern.... And it doesn't help that the entire rest of the division will make the playoffs.

Disagree fine, but at least state what's 'horrible'. Matrix brought up a good point, I don't even really like my idea anymore.

Reseed, is like after you win your series if you the 1 seed you face the lowest seed that wins in the next round that way you dont have to worry bout suns vs spurs in the semifinals.

and im not a fan of 1-16 i like the 1-8 with both conferences with 1-16 you probably dont have the 99 knicks or the 94 sonics, and i also agree with what matrix31 said what if the #1 team wants to face the #2 team cause they match up better with them then you got the best two teams facing each other in the first round which i doubt anyone would want to see

And yeah, 1-16 will never happen.. it's just too extreme. So that's why we shouldn't even bother talking about it.

Maybe you can have it so that the #1-4 seeds cannot choose teams that have home-court advantage and have to select from only a range of lower-seeded playoff teams.

The only changes that need to be made are reseeding after the first round, shortening the length of first round series from 7 to 5, and qualifying only the top 12 teams from around the league, regardless of conference so in that way garbage teams such as Washington, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Atlanta can't even remotely sniff the playoffs.
