Who are the best five Celtics?

What players past and present who played a significant time for the Celtics, would you say are the top 5? Heres what I have so far:

    1. Bill Russell
    2. Larry Bird
    3. Bob Cousy
    4.
    5.

    1 - Russel
    2 - Bird
    3 - Havlicek
    4 - Cousy

5 is the hardest one. You could go with any of the following:

McHale, Pierce, Cowens, Sam Jones, Parish, etc.

But those top 4 are set in stone, in my opinion.

      5. Pierce/Lewis/Parish

*I know I'm cheating w/ #5. But I just can't decide. You have Parish's defense, durability etc...but he had one heck of a supporting cast although it did hurt his offensive output, he was kind of like KG before KG IMO.

Pierce is good, but can you imagine if he had some REAL help when he was in his prime (he's kind of at the tail end of his prime now...and look at how he plays 'D" when he doesn't have to carry the load on offense)? He's in the top 5 or 6 now in terms of all time leading scorers in C's history.

Then there's my man Reggie Lewis. I put him in the same category as Pierce, except for the fact that he was just starting to reach his prime when he passed away. He was another one that really didn't have any help and had to carry the C's on offense which would make his "D" suffer...even though he did play respectable "D". R.I.P Reg...

Re: Who are the best five Celtics?

Yeah, I'm not so sure Robert Parish is even in the Top 10 best Celts of all-time.

I wouldn't know who to pick between Cousy and Hondo and I'm sure no one on this board remembers either of them playing (maybe a few remember the tail end of Hondo's career). From what I've heard/seen from back in the day Cousy would probably be above Hondo.

When it's all said and done Pierce will be up there, title or not.

Re: Who are the best five Celtics?

First off how does no one have Dave Cowens on their list?
7 time all star in the 10 years he played for Boston, ave. 18 ppg and 14 rpg for his career, led the C's to 2 titles including ave 21 ppg and 16.5 rpg in 1973 while leading them to a 68-14 record.

                  Anyway my list in order.
                  1. Russell
                  1. Bird
                  3. Havlicek
                  4. Cousy
                  5. Cowens

You know, I copied the original poster's list and thought I just moved Cousy down one spot to put Havlicek in there, but I put Parish in there instead. I don't even like Parish, and I'm a C's fan, ha.

I put Cowens at my number five, but then changed it to McHale. Like CFav and Longhorn said though... the number five is really hard to choose.

McHale just doesnt have the #'s Cowens has.
McHale ave. 18 ppg and only 7 rpg, Cowens was a better defender and a MUCH better rebounder.

yea Cowens could be on there also for sure imo...but he's not a sure fire better pick than McHale imo. McHale gets overshadowed by Bird but he was a great player.

Kevin McHale: "Possessing a wide variety of offensive moves close to the basket the agile, long-armed McHale played in seven National Basketball Association All-Star Games between 1984 and 1991. He led the NBA in field goal percentage in 1987 and 1988, shooting 60.4 percent each season. Also a standout defensive player, McHale was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First or Second Team six times. He twice blocked nine shots in a game, the most ever by a Boston Celtics' player (blocked shots did not become an official NBA statistic until the 1974 season)."

It's a toss up between Cowens and McHale...cant go wrong with either of them imo.
