Re: Chris Kaman Cleared to Play for Germany

The one thing I really dislike about this is how the way 'normal' people can gain citizenship is by-passed when it's about scientists and athletes. He'd really have a tough time trying to get the passport here in Germany if he wasn't a b.baller who was recognized to be useful for the countries benefit in sports.
But that is similar in nearly all countries.

Re: Chris Kaman Cleared to Play for Germany

This takes away from the intrigue of the Olympics, in my opinion.

No longer is it countries taking their best citizens and playing against other countries best citizens... now it's just a bunch of guns for hire getting random dual-citizenship just so they can participate in the Olympics.

What if Germany goes on to win the Olympics because of Chris Kaman's stellar play (hypothetical)? Is that fair to other countries competing, does that gold medal mean as much... will the rules change once these teams start winning medals with players not from their country?

I mean, players like Tim Duncan and Hakeem Olajuwon played their college ball in America, played years and years in the NBA here, were given citizenship and subsequently played for the US Olympic team. They legitimately lived in America, made their living in America and loved America as a country.

If Chris Kaman has been in Germany longer than 2 months of his life, I would be surprised. He grew up on a farm in the mid-west and played for Central Michigan. There's no way this guy should be given dual-citizenship.

Becky Hammond grew up in the mid-west and lived most of her life in America... but she plays pro ball over in Russia and makes a ton of money over there. In fact, she lives there about 8 months out of the year and earned her dual-citizenship the way most other people do. I say her playing for Russia is about 100 times more legitimate than Kaman playing for Germany.

The rule is stupid. The Olympics need to change it. It takes away from these events and is unfair for everyone. It's not Kaman's fault or Hammond's fault... it's just a terrible rule.

Rofl, literally, thats classic, please never use something like that again, even for "hypothetical purposes"

It's a fair point though. I think people would question the process more if Kobe played for Italy.

Extremely accurate statement, my friend. Yet Kaman and Becky whoever don't really spark my interest. If they want to make some extra cash, I say let em'. But I understand your point completely.

But he moved to Italy when he was 6, then moved back to the States in 91.

BUZZZZZZZ!!! Wrong lol. Kobe was born in Philly. Joe was still a Sixer the year Kobe was born.

Joe left for Italy in '83.

Yupperz. The major part, though, is that he was born in the states and has no Italian blood.

I think you can latch onto another country if you live in said country for a certain amount of years. Like six years, maybe. I'm not sure.

No, the major part is citizenship. Kobe has more of a reason to play abroad than Kaman or Hammond. His formative life and basketball experiences took place over there. If blood was really the issue, than Ewing should have played for Jamaica, and Hammon would have no right to play for Russia.

                                wrong.

kobe is not italian in anyway point blank. so he can't play for them unless he lives there for a long time. but at the end of they day if he got in trouble over in italy guess where he's gonna get deported too???

seriously tho who care what team these ppl play for its just basketball.

and i wont EVEN mention what i think about patriotism for this country. he wanna play for germany let him play.
