Wednesday, March 26: The word out of the NBA is LeBron James is the only obvious NBA player in the McDonald's All-American game. None of the other players who are considering making the jump to the NBA -- Travis Outlaw (Mississippi State), Jackie Butler (Mississippi State), Charlie Villanueva (Illinois), James Lang (Louisville), Kendrick Perkins (Memphis) or Kris Humphries (Duke) -- are ready to contribute. "None of them could come into the league and help win one game, outside of LeBron," said one high-ranking NBA official after watching the workouts in Cleveland on Monday and Tuesday. "These players are far removed from contributing at any level of contributing in the NBA," said another scout. Part of the problem is that some of these players don't want to go to college. The NBA players association and NBA are looking into putting in an age limit of 20 for the 2004 draft if the Collective Bargaining Agreement is changed. That could mean more high school players trying to get into the draft and making poor decisions. Meanwhile, Villanueva, Lang, Butler and Brandon Bass (LSU) have all committed but not signed with their respective schools."

The age limit thing is something tht may have to be seriously considered but I think a minor league should be established for the NBA. I mean, theses kids are not the only high school athletes who do not want to go to college I assure you. In every other major sport there is a minor league system and the NBA should not be any different. Football does not have a minor leagues because no high school kid could ever go straight to the NFL so they are in a league of their own. I just feel these kids should have the option to bypass college and go to a minor league system. Baseball, hockey and tennis have lower tier ranks for kids to work their way up to "Bigs" and I think the NBA should have this too. -

i dont think they should do the nbdl thing. If they go pro they go to the league plain and simple. If they turn out to be a bust, then they should have went to college.Comment

But why should this only apply to basketball. If a kid is not cut out for college then forcing them to go that route is a mistake.Comment

NBDL used as a minor league would be nice, I think that's the best idea I've heard of. Some of you guys got to understand that some of these kids are struggling in their personal lives, with proverty and going to college is not an option. That's why the 20 yrs. age limit will fall through, because the NCAA doesn't not pay players any kind of money of any sort. NBDL as a minor league would make a whole lot of sense. Comment
