What's The Deal With Greg Oden?

So, I haven't really got a chance to see Oden play this year. But, I have been checking out his boxscores. When he plays, he has a high shooting percentage, he puts up decent points, blocks shots, rebounds well.

But, I've been looking at his (+/-) and it's been very poor IMO. I know that this is not a end all be all statistic as other things come into play, but the Blazers appear to be better when he is NOT on the floor.

I've looked at both Oden and Pryzbilla's +/- , and they are as follows:

    Oden/Pryzbilla
    -13 / -4 <-------Oden Started
    -6 / +4
    -2 /-3
    +13/ -6
    -11/+10
    +9/+34
    +3/+18
    -18/+8
    -22/+23 <-----Oden Started

From this sample of games, the Blazers are much better with Joel on the floor.

Now, I know Oden is a rook and what not, so maybe he just needs a little more experience and learn the NBA game more.

But, as it stands now, he is not having the impact that I thought he would have on this team.

Like I said earlier, I have not really gotten a chance to see the guy play. So what's going on with Oden?

I'd imagine it's just an adjustment period. Pryz has been around, so they know how to play with him..

I'd venture to say the feeling out process won't last too long, as soon as Oden is fully healthy, it'll be fine. He's nothing more than a garbage man this year. So there shouldn't really be much adjusting.. all he's expected to do is play defense and rebound.

I went to the game last night, and I think he just feels lost out on the court. Obviously he's still in the learning process, but it seems like he's not in rhythm with the offense. Our players are trying to force feed him the ball too much, which usually results in a turnover. Once he gets it in the post, if it wasn't picked off, our perimeter players would just stop and watch, while Oden would be called for traveling or an offensive foul.

With Joel on the court, we don't have to worry about posting him up and our offense flows a lot better. Defenders will overlook him and he'd be able to sneak under the hoop for an easy dunk, where with Oden, there'd be probably two defenders within arms length before he even caught the ball. We should be using that to our advantage instead of making him a focus on offense.

I'm not worried though, he is a rookie after all. It's great to have a 'backup' center as good as Joel though. Probably the hardest worker on our team.

The problem with Oden is that the Blazers have to many ball stoppers. Oden is a player who play(s) harder when he gets touches in the post. He is not a guy who simply want to be Marcus Camby or Tyson Chandler. And that's a major problem right now,

Oden may need to just concentrate on defense and offensive boards until he become more acclimated to what the Blazers are trying to do. Right now it seems like he is having to think about every possible action before he makes a move.

Same here, the pure fact that Oden comes off the bench and doesnt get to play quite as much with the starting unit is a pretty big factor in his +/- being so bad.

I like to give players coming into the league low expectations that way if they do bad your not dissapointed but if they do good your impressed. I really didnt expect much from Derrick Rose I thought he was the wrong choice for the Bulls but so far I am impressed.

Again, I know that the +/- is not a end all category.

But I think there is something to be said when it is as bad as it is for him. I posted two of the games where he started, and they were still the same results.

I haven't looked, but I'm wondering if other players in the second unit have a +/- similar to his.

In tonights game, Oden started again. And again, Pryzbillas +/- was higher than Oden's. There is definitely something there.

In fact, in all the games that Oden started, Pryzbilla's +/- has been higher. So the fact that Oden is coming in with second string guys is irrelevent IMO.

I know he's brilliant on the court and his absence is surely give strength to the opposite team.. looking forward to see more of him in the upcoming matches.. great going buddy

Someone is using +/- to measure Oden's performance? What is this, hockey?

Seriously, Oden hasn't played very much for the Blazers yet. He's a bit of a project. Remember, the guy was a bit of a project when he first went to college and then found his offensive game. I think he'll be fine and it'll take about a half season (that's if he doesn't get injured again) before he totally clicks with his team.

I feel his offensive numbers will spike by his third year.

Greg Oden has no offensive game, he hasnt found anything yet.

Hes a career 10 ppg, 10 rpg, 2 bpg player that will round out a good perimeter team if he can actually stay healthy.

As soon as Durant gets out of OKC, he'll look more like Sam Bowie II
