    East Point Guards

Lookin around other forums.. I saw some "Derrick Rose All-Star?" threads.. first reaction was "na".

Then I took a gander at what the East has to offer.. and I can't really refute that Rose should and probably will end up on the team.

    I got:

    Rose
    Rondo
    Jose
    Harris
    Ford
    Miller
    Nelson
    Mo
    Sessions

I can see Mo Williams and probably either Rose, Harris being other choice.

More than likely Rose will get in because he's the more "exciting" player.

Not to get too off topic, but I can't argue with that list.

Brand may replace Ray.. but everyone else is pretty much etched in stone for the East.

Ray Allen? I'm not convinced that he isnt the best player out of that trio. That team is 13-2 and he is making key contributions as a member of the 'big 3'. He doesn't even get that many opportunities to score. Instead he is playing above average defense (though far superior to his defense in Seattle), moving stupendously WITHOUT THE BALL (yes, he has passed Rip Hamilton in this category), and converting a healthy percentage of his field goal opportunities. Not to mention, that he is one of the most clutch scorers in the conference.

If I had to replace anyone it would be Jamison ( I thought long and hard about adding him) and I might replace him with his teammate.

Devin Harris has been having a monster year. He and Rose are my picks for East PG, though Mo Williams could certainly make an argument, as he's been playing well also.

So if Harris (not too sure about this guy but I love Rose) and Rose are your PG selections which SG do you leave off? Carter (playing his best ball in past 3 years of his career), Johnson (might be the most complete player in the conference), and Allen ( a key contributer to the best team in the conference). Who do you leave off or do you take someone else off?

Yeah, that's the issue with the all-star selections... there are more good SGs in the East than PGs and probably the opposite scenario in the West. But of those three, I'd probably have to bump Allen just because Carter has monster numbers this year and is the more exciting player... Since the ASG is a fan spectacle, I don't think "key contributor on the best team" really comes into play, it should just be about individual play, numbers, and the spectacle of the event itself IMO.. There's plenty of honor for guys like Ray when they end up on All-NBA teams -- the ASG is a different thing entirely.

Personally, I think Ray Allen's smooth stroke is worth the price of admission. He would have better numbers if he was allowed more shots. Impact is more important than stats in my opinion.

I agree, but not in terms of the all-star game. That's what the end of season awards are for.

How is Ray Allen supposed to beat out guys like Kobe Bryant, Brandon Roy, and Dwyane Wade for those 3 SG spots on the ALL NBA TEAM? It is just easier to invite him to the ASG.

For the last time, judge players based on their impact and value to their respective teams and not solely on their numbers.

That's traditionally what coaches do in the end of season voting. I don't think that kind of thing has much relevance to the ASG.

The average fan doesn't see Ray Allen come in and hit two key jumpers to seal the win in a key game, they just see 16.9 PPG, 45% FG and 32% 3PT (!)... his other statistical contributions don't make anyone take a 2nd look (~4 boards, 3 assists)... So unless they're fortunate enough to watch all the Celtics games to see his supposed "big impact", I don't see where they're supposed to draw that conclusion. This is the arguably the inherent issue with fan voting (I hate fan voting myself but totally understand why it's in place) -- but since that fact isn't changing any time soon, I think that working within the system and using the means available (stats, "wow factor", celebrity) is the only viable solution to have a fun-to-watch game that makes the fans happy. The game itself is all about flash, and Ray Allen is basically the opposite of flash (despite his exciting shooting explosion at the end of last year's game).

His defensive performance against Kobe Bryant in the Finals seemed like a "wow factor" to me. The fact is that Allen is a much more complete player than a flashy guy like JR Smith. Allen is not just a one- dimensional shooter and is able to put the ball on the floor and take it to the rim. He is also not afraid to box out bigger stronger players around the league. Last but not least, he is one of most clutch shooters in the game. That is an All Star to me.
