    Are the Clippers contenders?

    Apparently they think so.
The Los Angeles Clippers and the rest of the NBA saw what point guard Jason Kidd did for the New Jersey Nets last season. The Clippers believe Andre Miller will have the same kind of impact on their team.

I think that this Miller deal gives them someone to lead the team, and a little more veteran experience. It improves the team, but will not make them a contender for the title yet. They wanted to compare this to the Nets getting Jason Kidd. It could have a dramatic effect on them, but unfortunately they don't play in the East so the road to the finals would be much tougher for them. If they were in the East I think they'd have as good of a chance for the finals as anyone. However being in the West I think that the Clippers will be a 5 or 6 seed, and could actually get into the second round this year.

    Re: Are the Clippers contenders?

I think the Clips getting in to the 2nd round is very realistic. But there are a few things that have to happen first (IMO),

    1. Odom must stay out of trouble and stay healthy.
    2. Maggette, Richardson must continue to improve, (Maggette especially from the perimeter).
    3. Someone needs to step up and provide quality minutes at the 4, and 5 spots behind Kandi, and Brand.
    4. Still need a quality back up PG. (although the Euro kid may just fill this role)
    5. Must improve half court defense, and shot selection on offense.

Personally I think they are an up and coming club, and from what I hear they were the one team that no one wanted to play in the first round of the playoffs last year, had they made the playoffs.

no offense fetter, but I don't think so

I still don't get why they gave up Miles and kept Odum, Miller will help, but look at the Nets J-Kidd can't always do it himself, I mean he's more of an all around player than a scorer and that's how Miller is, but Miles was electrifying, well at least they still have Brand

The problem Miles had is they had a gluttony of players at that same position (Miles, Odom, Maggette). Miles was the most marketable of the 3 which helped them land Miller. If Odom can stay out of trouble, and healthy he has one of the best all around games in the NBA, and is capable of putting up 18 ppg, 8 rbg, and 5 apg. 6'10" guys that can handle the ball and pass like a guard, and create his own shot don't grow on trees.

Your'e right about 6'10 agile ballhandling big men being hard to find, which makes the trade puzzling in my opinion. Darius was all of those things, plus he was a ticket seller. He was good friends with one of his teammates, and hadn't exhibited being a head case like Odom. Odom will probably leave when he is a free agent to go back east, while Miles might have stayed to be close to his best friend. Plus Miles is or will soon be a 7 footer, thus negating Odom.

Are they contenders? For sure. They now have a PG who can get people the ball (McInnis was one of my fav Clippers, but he was shoot first). Miller is awesome, and he's like 26, so he's a vet on the team.

Imagine Lakers/Clippers 1st round next year and the Clips knocking them off. Legit possibility if it happens? YES

They gave up Miles cuz thats what it took. I'm pretty damn sure that they wouldve gave Odom, but they didnt bite.

well, considering 'nobody' is really much more than a pretender than the lakers as long as they have shaq and kobe, i wouldn't say they were contenders just yet. maybe sac-town can overcome the lakers this year, but it's still a large order, especially if the officiating is as "consistent" as it was this past season. also, the reason the clipps had to trade miles is because cleveland wouldn't take odom, otherwise, odom would be gone. they had a trade worked out on draft nite for odom and caron butler, but the clipps didn't take him w/the 8th pick after sterling nixed the deal... oh well

                Re: Are the Clippers contenders?

The way to being a contender is having chemistry within a team. The Lakers and Kings are contenders, because they have team chemistry, meaning they have had the same group of players for many years.

I think the Clippers can make a push for the 7 or 8th spot. Or if they get lucky, maybe the 6th.

As for the playoffs, the deepest they will get will probably be the second round.

contenders to get to the playoffs yes. Better then Lakers/Sac-town/San Antoin/Dallas? No. But Andre Miller is a complete point guard. The man AVERAGED double digit assists on a SORRY team. That is amazing.

Nah, the clippers are an exciting team to watch and nothing more, for now.
