Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
Hello ~
I have enjoyed collecting and viewing Pistol Pete memorabilia, especially Live game films. It seems that they are very rare.. I would love to see many of his college and pro games.. also some rare games like the NC High School All-Star game in Greensboro, NC circa 1966..
Through reading his Bio's, I have come across some interesting tid-bits of info and trivia which I never before had realized, things that would've changed his basketball career significantly :
(1) Pete came very close to playing with "Dr. J"- Julius Erving- back in 1973-74. The Hawks had picked Dr. J in a draft and subsequently he was ruled "ineligible" to play for them. but later he went on to star for the 76ers and win a championship.
(2) The New Orleans Jazz would've probably made the playoffs in 1977 had Pete not injured his knee.
(3) Had Pete stayed in basketball one or two more seasons, he almost assuredly would've won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics.
I wish that Pete had achieved his dream of winning a championship, but if he were to give his opinion, I am sure that his faith in Christ is what means the most to him in his life. Although he didn't always feel this way, Christ fulfilled all of Pete's longings and desires.
I wish that I had been able to watch Pete Maravich play basketball. It would've been a real thrill. I will have to settle for watching videos.
Thanks for the opportunity to share.

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
I also wish that Pete had played basketball in the Carolinas.. like for the old Carolina Cougars.. I went to see the Cougars play, with Joe Caldwell, not realizing the history of the Draft War of 1970 between the Cougars and the Atlanta Hawks, and the ultimate jump to the ABA by Caldwell from the Hawks. The Hawks and Maravich would've been better if Caldwell had stuck with the NBA's Hawks.. and Maravich may have been better if he had started his career with the ABA's Cougars.. this is all speculation.. undoubtedly, he would've led the ABA in scoring and assists.
If Pete played today, he would wow crowds and be on ESPN Highlights each and every day.Comment

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
Guys 30-40 years ago wouldn't even be on D-league teams today. The talent level has evolved to a level does guys couldn't handle. They were great in their era and that's all that counts, but placing them on the plain of today's global NBA isn't even fair. You looking at the Chair MAN!
Number may not tell the whole story ,but they never lie either.Comment

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
My dad saw him score over 60 when he was at LSU playing Alabama. Said he was basically the entire team and he was the best player he ever got to see play in person.NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
NBA: Dallas Mavericks
MLB: Texas Rangers
NHL: Dallas Stars
NCAA: Alabama Crimson Tide

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
Wrong. Certain players who were earthbound and slow afoot wouldn't crack an NBA squad. Guys like George Mikan and Bob Cousy. Maravich absolutely would make an NBA team today and would average about 30 points per game. Problem is, he would allow 40 points per game since his defense was so pitiful.Comment

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
I'm think Kevin McHale would still score in the paint against Howard, Bynum, KG, Bosh, Horford...etc.
Anway, I don't think that today's players would play/look the same if they played 30-40 years ago, just like old-time players wouldn't look/play like they did back then.
For example, I think Dwight Howard would be a 6'11, 220 center if he played back then...Oh yeah, he still wouldn't have a real post game...which would either make him spend more time on the bench or make him develop a post game because coaches wouldn't care that he can dunk nicely. He would probably play more because of his blocking ability. My Specs:
ZX Spectrum
CPU: Z80 @ 3.5 MHz
GPU: Monochrome display
RAM: 48 KB
OS: Sinclair BASICComment

Re: If Pistol Pete Maravich played today...
Same for me, every time I watch some of his highlights I get mad that I wasn't able to watch him live. He did things that I've never seen anyone else do even today.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
