Who could overlook an NBA great like Dumars? He was a terrific clutch scorer who could power his way to the hoop with ease. Who's number did Detroit call when they needed a score? Dumars of course. Joe was also one of the great perimeter defenders that the game has ever seen. When the chips were down Joe always came up with the clutch stop, steal, shot, or pass.

he did his job, but i wouldn't consider him a great all around player... scoring was his strength... he was good defensively, but he dont fit that all-around description...

He was a dynamic clutch scorer, a good passer, a terrific defender, and he set the tone for the Pistons on most nights. He was so much more than just a scorer. (EX. George Gervin was strictly a scorer)

i understand that, but all around is like doing it all... he doesn't rebound enough or get enough assist to be considered a great all around player...

Dumars was a very good passer. Looking at assists is not a good way to judge passing ability. He was definitely an all around player.

Exactly. It definantly isn't the only way to look at his passing seeing as how he played next to one of the greatest assists men in NBA history in Isiah Thomas. Of course Dumars isn't going to put up a bunch of assists numbers and he wasn't suppose to. But you will hardly ever find anything saying he made bad passes or made alot of turnover cause of bad passing.

Well, you can said a player is better all-around, but if one player is dominant at something, it may outweigh the versatility of another player.

If somebody dominates the paint like Shaq did physically, where almost no one could guard him, then some might say that Hakeem, who was a better passer and ball-handler than Shaq, was still not as good due to Shaq's complete dominance in one area.

It's almost like... would you rather have a guy who averages 8 ppg, 15 rpg, 2 apg and 1 bpg or a guy who averages 13, 6, 5, and 2?

Player A will grab rebounds around him left and right, but player B can do almost everything but rebound better. However that difference in rebounding is so great that Player A would be considered better.

Grant Hill is one of those complete players. Too bad he couldn't stay "complete" for long time. Still, he's the man.
