Re: Garnett maybe out for playoffs

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Kevin Garnett isn't ready to start the playoffs, and Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that there's a strong possibility that he will miss the entire postseason.

With Or Without You

The Boston Celtics are still a winning team without Kevin Garnett in the lineup. But they're not as good a defensive team without KG, allowing more points per game and a higher shooting percentage.

"He's not going to be ready. After watching him practice, there's no way," Rivers said on WEEI-AM. "The way I saw him move today, I don't know if he'll be ready."
When asked to clarify, Rivers said there was a chance Garnett could be out for the rest of the season. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said he could not elaborate on Rivers' comments.
The Celtics begin the best-of-seven first round series against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.
"We're going to move on without him," Rivers said.
Garnett has been the Celtics' inspirational leader since joining them in a 2007 trade that completed the new Big Three and propelled the franchise to its record 17th NBA title. He averaged 15.8 and 8.5 rebounds per game for the defending champions this season.
He injured his right knee Feb. 19 and missed the next 13 games before returning for four, but never playing as many as 18 minutes. With the Celtics assured of a high playoff berth, Rivers then held Garnett out with an eye toward bringing him back for the last three games of the regular season; that became the last two, then the last one, but he never made it back.

” -- Doc Rivers on Kevin Garnett

Rivers said Thursday he watched Garnett run at the team's practice facility and said he had to shut him down after 20 minutes.
"If he can't get through biking and working out without swelling and his leg locking, I don't know how you can play in the playoffs," Rivers said. "This was an honest run today, you couldn't make your way through it. The guy's a warrior, you see him try to mask his way through it. But after 20 minutes of running, I don't see it. After today, there's no way he can play."
Garnett's reaction?
"He was frustrated. He was mad at me, mad at everybody. Then he understood," Rivers said. "He put up a fight. He's really frustrated, but that's Kevin. That's why we got him, because he cares so much."
Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said he's confident Garnett is going to be "absolutely fine, 100 percent, over the long term. The short term is much less clear at this point."
Boston was 18-7 without Garnett this year and finished the season 62-20 -- not good enough to secure the home-court advantage that proved crucial in last year's title run. Should the Celtics meet the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals, they would open the series in Cleveland; the Los Angeles Lakers would also have home-court in a potential NBA finals matchup.
But, without Garnett, what had seemed like an easy road through the early rounds has gotten more difficult.

True. But Dwight is really the only player that the Magic can't replace to some degree at this point. If Boston has to start anyone that's currently on their bench, it leaves them in a pretty big hole.

I have a feeling KG is gonna play through the pain, though. Which could be good or bad for Boston to have a one-legged Garnett hopping around during the playoffs.

This is the weakness of this Boston team... depth. Any one of the big three go down, even if Rondo goes down, they are in big time trouble. KG was probably the most important of the Big Three, as well.

I don't think the Celtics will miss KG that much when it comes to making up for his scoring numbers. However, where the Celtics will miss KG is on defense as he covered up a lot of his teammates' deficiencies on that end of the court with his length, quickness, agility, leadership (communicating to his teammates and getting them to be at the right spot in every situation) and shotblocking ability.

I agree with this. KG's impact on defense and on the glass are irreplaceable. His emotional impact and leadership on the floor will be missed, as well.

I dont understand how people can say a Garnett-less Celtics doesnt make for one less disadavantage for the Bulls. We most likely arent winning the series, but any time you can keep a defensive leader like Garnett out of the line-up, it improves your chances.

As someone said on TNT I think, their pick and roll defense has been rough without KG. The Bulls will need Brad Miller to hit the mid-range jumper off the picks (Tyrus too, though he should really just stop taking those) and a lot of slashing from Salmons/Rose... should be fun to watch.

I'm not feeling great about getting the Hornets + Chandler in the first round... We're 2-2 on the year despite Tyson not playing against us once -- he gave us problems last year with Camby, but I'm not sure if Nene will fare a whole lot better. We defended CP3 really well last time we played and stopped their pick and roll game with West, so hopefully that keeps up... no Peja in that game though. Hard to tell in that series.

I second this. Defensively they are not that good without him in the lineup. They take a steep hit defensively. And it's weird because they have solid defensive players after Garnett but his presence makes them the best defensive team in the NBA. Without him, they are at the bottom half.

I guess that Garnett injury was worse then anyone expected. The C's are gonna have a helluva time if/when they get around to facing Cleveland and it's gonna be worse without KG.

Yeah, it does the Bulls a fighting chance to win the series if KG can't play for the Celtics. But I don't know if the Bulls play the style of offense that can take full advantage of a KG-less Celtics squad. Chicago is basically a jump-shooting team with the exception of Rose and occasionally Gordon during an iso situation, or Hinrich/Salmons on a leak out. To take advantange of a KG-less Celtics squad a team would have to constantly look to drive to the basket with various perimeter players so to challenge their best interior defender -- Kendrick Perkins -- and get him in foul trouble. Then it would be possible for any team to hammer the Celtics on the offensive boards once Perkins is out.

As for the Celtics, they probably figure that they won't be able to put the clamps down opponents defensively without KG if the game was played at a slow, conservative half-court pace throughout. So what they may do is change their game plan so to make the game a shootout. Like play a primarily up-temp game and probably utilize more 3-guard lineups featuring Rondo, Allen and House, and play Paul Pierce spot minutes at PF and look to outscore teams. Who knows what they have in store for Chicago.

You have got to wonder if he has some sort of tear in that knee. Not a good look by sitting out this long.

All this talk on other forums about Garnett pulling a "Willis Reed" is funny though lol.
