Nuggets VP named Executive of Year

Denver Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien has been named the NBA’s Executive of the Year, a league source said Saturday afternoon.

Warkentien engineered the early season trade that sent Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for point guard Chauncey Billups, a move that helped turn the Nuggets into one of the top Western Conference contenders. Warkentien’s budget free-agent signings of guard Dahntay Jones and center Chris Andersen also helped strengthen Denver’s roster.

Warkentien joined the Nuggets in the summer of 2005 as director of player personnel. He was promoted to vice president of basketball operations a year later.

The Executive of the Year award is voted on by the league’s general managers.

Everyone thought this team was going to be trash because of that Camby trade for scraps. With a healthy Nene and K-Mart, they were able to convince Melo to play some D, increasing their chances. That trade for Billups didn't hurt I guess.

Good choice imo, even though some of their success was due to picking up the Birdman, and getting a few guys healthy.

Camby for Scraps give him the edge over Ferry IMO. Cavs were going to the playoffs and were going to be the top seed regardless of whether or not they added Smith.

Exactly. Mo for Amon Jones was a straight up raping. At the time of the DET/DEN trade, no one knew AI would be such a bad fit. Alot of people thought the Nuggets got robbed early on, lol. And losing Camby for nothing wasn't a good thing. Jones was a nice find though, and having Birdman/Joe Smith falling into each teams lap was a wash.

Ferry signed Boobie Gibson to a ridiculous 5-year deal and got it done quickly which allowed them to resign Delonte at a good price. Had the Gibson negotiation dragged on, West probably walks, especially after getting Mo. He also signed Kinsey and Lorenzen for scraps, both of whom have been a big part of the bench mojo, drafted two solid bigs and most importantly, coaxed Mike Brown into getting an offensive coach. Best of all he's done this without mortgaging the future...we have as much cap room as anyone in 2010.

Giving the Cavs top honors for coach and GM when you also have the MVP does seem like a bit too much props though. I can definitely understand the voting.
